Stephen H. Cumberbatch has been making music with a sense of independence and curiosity for several decades and now recording under the name C’batch, the White Plains-based composer, producer, author and multi-instrumentalist has spent years moving between instruments, technologies and musical styles, developing a creative world that revolves around around exploration rather than limitation. Working across guitars, keyboards, synths and samplers, his catalogue reflects an artist more interested in discovering where an idea can lead than following a predetermined path.
This independent ethos can be traced back to 1984, when Stephen and Yvette Cumberbatch co-founded Stevette Music, Inc. The decision formed a platform through which he could develop and release music according to his own vision, resulting in an artistic philosophy that’s remained consistent throughout his career. As an established ASCAP member with decades of experience behind him, C’batch has continued to follow that self-directed path, allowing his music to take shape naturally alongside changing technology and musical landscapes.
Across his work, smooth jazz, contemporary R&B, pop, electronic production, ambient textures and cinematic influences coalesce within a wider musical language. C’batch uses them as different ways of exploring atmosphere, emotion and mood, resulting in a discography capable of shifting between warmth, electronic detail and cinematic scale while retaining a recognisable sense of musical purpose.
That vision is particularly apparent in his ongoing Vault series and by drawing on material originally developed during the Unfinished Business era alongside C’batch & Herring, the series presents an exciting opportunity to reconsider the past through the technology and production techniques of the present. Earlier compositions are reconstructed, expanded and reimagined, allowing ideas that might once have remained unfinished to develop in new directions. Familiar musical concepts can therefore exist simultaneously as reminders of where C’batch has been and as springboard for where he’s going next.

The latest chapter now comes with The Vault 4 – Cinematic, which takes that philosophy into an expansive collection of twenty compositions inspired by film scores, emotional storytelling and electronic sound design. Combining orchestral arrangements, ambient textures, cinematic percussion and melodic electronic production, the album plays out like the soundtrack to a film that exists only in the listener’s imagination. Each composition becomes its own scene or chapter, with melodic piano, orchestral scoring and electronic textures working together to suggest atmosphere, movement and emotion.
Several pieces revisit earlier compositions, transforming them into fully cinematic interpretations, while other tracks were penned specifically for the collection. This balance between reinterpretation and new material gives the album a sense of continuity without allowing it to become tied exclusively to its origins. The release opens with an alternate version of “The Beat of the Night,” which forms with the bubble of synth before jumping into a bouncy groove stacked with stabby beats, pulsing bass lines and bright instrumental leads, crafting an energising instrumental jam that’s cinematic and danceable in equal measure.
Tracks like “Clubadub” lean further into dance-focused sphere where snapping percussion and colourful synth-driven arrangements form infectious musical moments brimming with memorable melodies and euphoric aesthetic. The stuttering groove of “Spring” pairs stomping beats with woozy synth lines while “That Sparkle in Your Eyes” blends steady rhythmic momentum with misty synth tones and funky guitar backing to craft a disco-inflected outing that’s transportive and impossible not to love. “In the Mood?-2” flows with the twinkle of chiming tones and elegant guitar notes to cast a dreamy moment that closes the first half of the LP with a charming soundscape.
“Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling) 1a” glides with dazzling orchestral elements before slipping into a hip hop groove where crisp beats and string-led instrumentation forms an engaging jam. “All For You” lands with the flash of jittery lead guitar before rustling drums inject charging energy to deliver a thrilling slice of bluesy rock-focused music cut with soulful vocal leads, offering an exhilarating sound packed full of catchy songwriting and musicianship flair. Closing the release with “Underwater Chorus Chrome Carousel Groove 1,” bright synth notes and punchy drums combine to lay down a stunning finale to the release that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.
