Newcomer Ravens Beats is a rising artist from Stevenage in the UK, creating music with a purpose that reaches beyond the usual framework of songwriting. Revolving around personal experience, candid writing and a steadfast mission of raising mental health awareness, the project transforms difficult moments into powerful artistic statements. Through highly reflective production and emotive storytelling, Ravens Beats uses music as a way to open conversations, offer support and examine the experiences that often remain buried.
Inspired by artists including Ren, Olivia Dean, Skye Newman and Norah Jones, Ravens Beats draws from musicians who understand the importance of emotional connection and heartfelt lyricism. The project is driven by a desire to reach people facing their own challenges and remind them that difficult experiences don;t have to be faced in isolation. Behind that mission is a story shaped by profound personal loss; after losing a partner to mental health struggles in 2015, Ravens Beats found a way to transform grief into something constructive, using creativity as a means of processing pain while helping others understand their own journeys.
That poignant context sits at the heart of the project, with each release designed not only to express personal experiences but also to encourage wider discussions around mental health support. The beginning of this artistic chapter was also defined by collaboration, with Ravens Beats linking up with Viii Dorsey through Music Production for Women, a programme that provided opportunities to develop technical skills while creating meaningful creative relationships. Their partnership became the platform for the debut release titled “Trauma,” a track that unveils Ravens Beats’ emotional and artistic vision in superb fashion.

Recorded in Ravens Beats’ home studio, “Trauma” captures a profoundly personal exploration of the lasting impact of difficult experiences. With Viii Dorsey providing vocals during a UK visit, the track was recorded in an unexpectedly brief but powerful session, with the vocal performance completed in just one hour. Thematically, “Trauma” examines the way painful experiences can remain long after the original moment has passed, exploring trauma as something that can exist deep within a person, leaving a permanent imprint while shaping how they understand themselves and the world around them.
The release carries an especially personal visual identity through its artwork, which features an actual image of Ravens Beats’ skull from life-saving operations connected to sleep apnoea. The condition was identified by their late partner, adding another element of meaning to a project already shaped by themes of survival, memory and determination. Brought in by footsteps entering the studio, the arrangement lands with melancholic piano tones, warm bass notes and the rattle of crisp percussion as Viii’s soulful vocals glide in to spin aching melodic leads carrying moving lyrics.
Flowing with mellow groove and a subtly dark atmosphere, the track progresses with the intricate flicker of lead guitar touches while Viii’s stunning vocals shine throughout to deliver a powerful musical moment that’s impossible not to be moved by. With slick twists and turns, the song floats through engaging instrumental passages while the finale brings layers of vocals and dancing guitar flutters before coming full circle with footsteps walking away. With this debut artistic statement, Ravens Beats begins a journey built on honesty, empathy and the belief that music can play a role in meaningful conversations and we can’t wait to see what comes next from this exciting new project.
