Coming out of San Francisco, The Myth Pool is the collaborative project of Amie Penwell and Vicente Rodriguez, two musicians who’ve built a creative space where alternative rock, R&B and 80s new wave can collide to produce something entirely new. Their sound blends moody synths, intimate vocals and both vintage and futuristic textures, with The Myth Pool finding beautiful possibilities that appear when genre frameworks are ignored.
The project began with a question about what the younger versions of themselves would have wanted to make before anyone told them what music was supposed to be. Before genres, algorithms, marketing plans or the anxiety of wondering whether anyone would listen, there was simply the desire to create something exciting and that context has become the creative spark of The Myth Pool.
Prior to The Myth Pool, Amie had recorded a full-length album, Windows, in 2017 and the EP Under City Lights in 2013, both in professional studios as a solo artist. But after those experiences, she sensed that something new was needed and her collaboration with Vicente began after they met at a Notes4Hope benefit concert nine years ago, eventually leading to a partnership that would allow them to work without the usual constraints of studio schedules.
Working from a small apartment with limited resources, borrowed time, cheap headphones and whatever equipment was available, Amie and Vicente stopped worrying about making something impressive and focused on making something that felt right to them. A bedroom became a movie studio, while a song became a doorway into somewhere more imaginative, resulting in a vision where alternative music meets dance rhythms, beauty melts into melancholy, handmade worlds coalesce with electronic ghosts and the sacred can happily share space with the ridiculous.

Now, their debut single titled “In It Together” is the first song to emerge from that process; Amie already had a demo from 2020 when Vicente heard it and suggested they try working on it together. Initially, the collaboration consisted of little more than the song and a GarageBand loop but when the two pieces met, something clicked. Suddenly, the limitations of their apartment became possibilities and they didn’t need a full drum kit or an expensive studio to begin. A Casio and a voice were enough and the significance was larger than the song itself when they realised they could create an entire body of music by working with what they had.
Brought in by the taps of pattering percussion, bright piano chords usher in Amie’s expressive vocals as she stitches delicate melodies into the intricate indie pop fabric. Flowing with emotive tone and heartfelt lyricism, her voice floats above the minimal arrangement which builds with the glide of warm bass and shimmering synth textures, casting a charming musical experience that’s at once dreamy and subtly grooving. Shifting with melancholic aesthetic, the swirling instrumental elements float below Amie’s overlapping vocal layers and gentle guitar lines to craft a mesmeric and truly engaging listening experience from start to finish.
It’s a superb showcase of the band’s songwriting flair and highly original sound, marking their entrance in spectacular fashion with a song that’s sure to win over listeners around the world. The Myth Pool is about more than a collection of genre-bending songs, it’s an experiment in creative freedom, built around the belief that making something can matter more than optimising it. As they share more of their compelling musical output, we can’t wait to see what The Myth Pool has in store next on what will no doubt be their breakout year.
