Formed in 2022, Rubbish Party have been making an impact as a UK-based, trans-Atlantic indie rock outfit led by German-American lyricist, poet and self-described rogue philosopher Evan Zorn Von Berg. The project revels in the spaces between musical chaos and carefully constructed writing, offering a sound with both originality and wide appeal. Alongside Evan, the band’s creative talents include Brutus Brimstone, Samuel Cummings, J. Edwin Galloway, Alfred Lavender, Edward Clutterbuck, Thornton McDaniel and Dread Phantom, all adding to Rubbish Party’s unique output.
Rubbish Party first landed on the scene with Culinary Vendetta, an audacious punk rock concept record built around a gloriously deranged cannibalistic tale. It was an introduction that mapped out the band’s appetite for the morbid but their ambitions weren’t limited to punk’s more abrasive edges. With the Love and Decay EP, they ventured into indie synth rock, combining alternative aesthetic with atmospheric electronics and story-driven songwriting. The record went on to rack up over a hundred thousand spins, helping confirm Rubbish Party’s status as a band intent on sonic disruption.
Their sound now occupies a compelling sphere between sharp guitars, atmospheric synths and emotionally charged storytelling. Comparisons to The Smiths, Gorillaz and Talking Heads offer some indication of their range but Rubbish Party’s identity is ultimately defined by the collision of those influences as opposed to any one of them. Now their macabre streak returns in particularly vivid fashion with “Please Stay,” a new standalone bonus track that expands the world of Culinary Vendetta while functioning as a haunting epilogue to its twisted scene.

Penned by Evan, the song enters an intensely claustrophobic emotional space; its central context frames a lover attempting to stop a departing partner, blocking the door and pleading with them to stay, capturing the fear of losing someone and the overwhelming confession of a love deeper than anything previously experienced. Then Rubbish Party do what Rubbish Party do best and the romance takes a sinister turn. The song’s most chilling moment comes when the narrator declares, “You said your heart was mine, so your heart I will take” and within the dark artistic world established by Evan, the sentiment carries a horrifyingly literal implication.
Brought in by the bright plucks of guitar, the shuffle of tinny drums and pulse of bass forms a bouncy indie rock sound that develops with impassioned vocal leads from Alfred Lavender, channelling a vibe akin to The Strokes. Peppered with slick instrumental flourishes where flickering lead guitar notes dance atop the steady drive of the arrangement, the song serves up a catchy and emotionally compelling jam from start to finish. Energising, memorable and highly original, it’s a superb display of Rubbish Party’s engaging musical output.
“Please Stay” strips away much of the experimentation associated with Love and Decay to return to the band’s origins. The track is gritty, bleeding and visceral, allowing the emotional punch of the story to sit directly against a lively indie rock setting. The timing also finds the band moving forward and with The Ball at Sandringham slated for a summer release and another new album anticipated later in the year, Rubbish Party are continuing to build on their catalogue in spectacular fashion and we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store next.
