Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and classical flamenco guitarist Julian Tcherassi has spent almost two decades developing a musical language built on the meeting point between technical talent and emotional expression. With years of international performances across festivals, venues and private events behind him, Julian has crafted a sound where intricate fingerstyle guitar, flamenco rhythms and compelling vocals meet a wider alternative style, resulting in music that’s based in impressive musicianship but ultimately driven by feeling.
The balance between discipline and emotion sits at the heart of Julian’s creative world, with his classical flamenco background giving his playing an intricate, highly detailed quality, while his songwriting reaches towards something more expansive. By not viewing technical ability and emotional expression as separate ideas, he brings the two together, creating songs that feel carefully constructed while retaining their human charm.
His influences reveal a similarly broad musical perspective; the atmospheric experimentation of Radiohead and Pink Floyd, the emotional intensity of Jeff Buckley, the flair of Mendeleyev and the virtuosic guitar work of Tommy Emmanuel have all helped shape his sound. Julian doesn’t simply reproduce those influences however, he filters their qualities through his own experiences, taking inspiration from their ability to turn sound into something deeply communicative. Music represents another way of processing the experiences that have shaped him, transforming personal change into something that can be shared.
Away from music, his life has taken him down an equally unconventional creative path as the founder of Magiktea, a healthy tea company now available in more than 1,000 stores nationwide. Building that business has given him a wealth of experiences and perspectives that now feed into his artistic work, forging an interesting crossover between two very different worlds, with the stories accumulated through his professional journey becoming part of the material from which his songwriting is formed.

Last year, Julian opened the door to that musical world with his debut single “Mission to Departure,” marking the beginning of a new chapter after years spent developing his sonic vision, giving audiences their first opportunity to experience the sound he’d been shaping. Since then, a series of releases has continued to establish his artistic direction and now, “Darker Colors” offers another window into that developing output. An uplifting song about moving beyond the shadows of heartbreak, the track focuses on the transition from emotional darkness towards the brighter colours that can arise at the end of a relationship.
It’s a theme that allows Julian’s music to land in the space between reflection and renewal, acknowledging pain without allowing it to become the final destination. Set up by the soft flutter of acoustic guitar notes and deep vocal chants, his hushed delivery and gentle performance crafts an intimate scene that gradually builds with strummed chords and rising vocal intensity before simmering with dancing electric guitar leads which hover above the stripped back arrangement as the song gathers a more hurrid energy.
Gliding through intricate shifts in rhythm and melodic ideas, Julian’s voice stretches out above the lively chords to deliver a delightful musical experience that’s highly original and thematically meaningful in equal measure. With “Darker Colors,” Julian Tcherassi continues to go from strength to strength as an artist interested in transformation, both musically and emotionally. His sound draws from flamenco tradition, alternative experimentation and expressive songwriting, but remains focused on the same essential idea of using music to communicate what experience leaves behind. As his catalogue continues to grow, he’s turning years of stories, influences and musical discipline into something distinctly his own.
