VelumVelvet shares new single “Polarised by Love”

VelumVelvet is the artistic banner created by UK-based songwriter Donna James, a project built around imagination and the quiet confidence that comes from finally embracing creativity. While not following a carefully mapped out plan, VelumVelvet developed through fragments of everyday life, a lyric written down in passing, a melody captured between moments, an idea waiting patiently to become something more. Over time, those small creative sparks transformed into a growing catalogue of songs shaped by memory, emotion and cinematic storytelling.

Ultimately, VelumVelvet is about seeing the extraordinary within the ordinary; Donna’s songwriting focuses on the details that often go unnoticed, turning everyday experiences into vivid emotional scenes. A neon rose, a morning cup of tea or a brief moment can become the setting for a much larger story, with each image carrying its own sense of nostalgia, intimacy and meaning. It’s a creative lens through which Donna explores memory, imagination and reinvention, with the persona representing the version of herself willing to step fully into her artistic sphere, transforming years of hidden ideas and private creativity into something openly shared.

In her sound, softness meets strength, emotion sits alongside confidence and memories blend with new beginnings. Donna embraces the unexpected moments that shape creativity, finding inspiration in accidents, inside jokes and the playful chaos that can often lead to the most heartfelt ideas. Making her artistic entrance earlier this year with the debut double single “Devotion,” she’s since shared a string os impressive releases that have won over fans across the UK and beyond.

Now she unveils her brand new single titled “Polarised by Love,” a new chapter that lands as the room of romance within VelumVelvet’s house of emotions. Thematically, the track captures the first spark of connection, transforming a concise encounter into an entire universe of possibility. Its story begins on platform two, where a chance sighting of a stranger waiting for a train becomes a series of imagined moments, signals and unanswered questions. The concept behind the song reflects Donna’s ambition to create music that feels cinematic, framing the instant when a person becomes more than a stranger, when a single moment opens the door to endless worlds.

“Polarised by Love” also marks an intentional shift in musical direction, with Donna embracing a more openly pop-focused sound while allowing a subtle 80s influence to colour the track’s identity. Opened by the soft plucks of instrumental tones, the lively patter of drums brings a driving energy as pulsing bass notes and airy string textures swirl around elegant vocal leads which spin delicate melodic lines above the immersive alternative pop arrangement. Flowing with memorable melodies carrying picture painting lyricism, “Polarised by Love” shimmers with bright instrumental elements propelled by the steady punch of drums to cast a dreamy listening experience from start to finish.

Peppered with intricate piano flutter and wrapped in an intimate sonic fabric, it’s a stunning musical moment that’s transportive and truly impossible not to love. Interestingly, “Polarised by Love” almost remained hidden, with the song sitting on the shelf until a friend heard it and offered a simple piece of advice, “You need to release it.” That encouragement gave the track a new life, allowing a song that might have remained private to become another superb moment within the VelumVelvet universe. With every release, Donna James continues to shape VelumVelvet into a space where storytelling, emotion and creativity can exist freely and she’s sure to charm more and more listeners on what’s sure to be her breakout year.
