Some bands arrive fully formed, their identity carefully packaged before they’ve even had the chance to properly test it, Royal Blush however, took the harder route. The Jersey City outfit built their sound the old-fashioned way, in crowded basement shows, DIY venues and packed rooms across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, where songs have to earn their place in front of a live audience. Before wider attention came knocking, Royal Blush were learning what worked by putting their music directly in front of people, allowing every performance to reshape and strengthen the songs and that connection with the stage remains fundamental to who they are.
The band began life in 2021 as a solo project for guitarist Andrew Merclean, initially providing a space for his own musical ideas. It didn’t stay that way for long and the arrival of vocalist Allison Heckart expanded the project’s creative scope, introducing a collaborative dynamic that opened up new emotional and sonic possibilities. Producer and guitarist Patryk Sikorski and drummer John Carbone soon completed the lineup, transforming Royal Blush into a band built around chemistry as opposed to a single creative voice.
Debut single “Roll the Dice” offered the first showcase of what Royal Blush could become, with subsequent releases including “Witness” and “Best Believe” taking their output further. Last year’s debut EP A Ways Away represented another emphatic step up, bringing together five tracks informed by the band’s years of live experimentation. These weren’t songs developed in isolation; they carried the fingerprints of the rooms in which they had been played, tested and strengthened.
Now, Royal Blush return with From Where We’re From, a brand new four-track EP whose title feels particularly fitting and by not attempting to pin the band down to one sound, the release embraces the different directions they can take, presenting four distinct snapshots of a group increasingly comfortable with its own range. From Where We’re From doesn’t flatten Royal Blush into a single defining sound, it holds up four different reflections, each showing another side of a group still growing, still experimenting and still willing to see what happens when the music leaves the basement and hits the room.

Opening track “Gimme (One Thing)” gets things moving with a cathartic outing, quickly mapping out a sense of momentum set up by Allison’s delicate vocals while the band’s blend of enthralling indie rock swirls around her alluring voice. Pattering drums, intricate guitar layers and expressive vocal performance carrying intoxicating melodic hooks all combine to serve up an anthemic indie experience brimming with memorable songwriting, superb musicianship and smooth ebb and flow.
The band then takes a sharp turn into the contemplative alternative country scene of “Ur Cure” where delicate guitar notes usher in mellow vocal delivery and laid back drums, casting a breezy soundscape where delicate melodic threads are stitched into a dreamy musical fabric. Still tinged with the band’s engaging indie rock energy and echoes of their pop-inflected appeal, it’s another stellar display of their enticing songwriting flair and performance panache.
“Roll the Dice” when arrives as the live staple that served as something of a mission statement during Royal Blush’s early years and now part of this EP, the song gets the chance to fully blossom into the epic musical moment it always threatened to become. Having been road-tested in front of audiences, it feels like a natural result of the band’s early philosophy; take the song to the room, see what happens and keep striding forward until it reaches its fullest potential as an energising indie rock track packed full of infectious vocal leads and rousing instrumentation.
Closing track “Like Ur Mine” takes perhaps the wildest journey of all, moving from slowcore territory towards cinematic ambition across four minutes. Its lyrics dwell in the confusion of forbidden love, with Allison’s stunning vocals carrying the moving tone of the song’s context above a gradually shifting arrangement that swells with punching drums, crunching guitars and belted vocal leads, delivering a thrilling finale to the incredible new EP from Royal Blush.
