Birmingham-based artist Kai Moa brings a musical background stacked with movement, rhythm and experimentation. A professional drummer by trade, Kai has performed across jazz ensembles, post rock outfits and punk bands, absorbing a vast range of approaches to rhythm and performance along the way. That experience now feeds directly into his solo work, where electronic production becomes a playground for ambient atmospheres, IDM, industrial textures and the unpredictable energy of improvisation.
Alongside his house music project Moa Bay, which has been releasing music since 2020, Kai Moa represents a different creative direction. The emphasis now shifts towards experimentation, with sounds and ideas colliding as opposed to settling into any one style or genre. Even the name reflects that philosophy; Kai Moa is a play on the word Chimera, referencing the Greek mythological creature made from three different animals as well as the biological idea of an animal composed of different sets of DNA, an apt description for a project built from contrasting musical components.
Within his sound, rhythm and improvisation remain central but they exist alongside techno, ambient music, industrial sounds and jazz, resulting in music that can move from restraint to explosive intensity without warning, creating productions that feel like environments in constant transformation. The project made its official debut in June with “(Sea),” followed quickly by its second and third singles as Kai began revealing more of the sonic world taking shape under his own name.
Now that experimentation reaches its most complete form with his debut EP, the curiously titled Some of My Best Friends Are…Electric Sheep. The four-track EP’s opening track, “≠ What It Is,” which had not yet been released, instantly maps out the release’s highly unique sonic character. Beginning with an industrial soundscape, it evokes a futuristic, dystopian city where disjointed rhythms, glitches, chopped vocal shots and wubbing synth elements dominate the landscape.

Then the atmosphere shifts and the industrial edges fade into something resembling cosmic jazz, creating the sensation of stepping through a portal into an entirely different realm where bright piano elements enter, building a richer texture before a lively drum solo takes over a beautiful chord progression reminiscent of psychedelic jazz from the 70s and 80s. The intensity continues to rise until the track finally erupts into a dark, gritty techno beat and suddenly, the listener is transported again, this time into a shadowy club setting where the kick drum becomes the dominant force. It is a sequence that captures the extraordinary creativity at the heart of Kai Moa, where jazz, electronics, industrial sound design and club-focused energy can melt into the same constantly shifting space.
Kai’s debut single “(Sea)” gently drifts into view with the stretch of soft texture and chiming instrumental elements, casting a dreamy scene where delicate plucks of guitar notes puncture the immersive sonic fabric. Sparse kick pulses add a laid back rhythmic energy as the composition drifts with hazy atmosphere and mesmeric melodic construction before smokey vocalisations float above the arrangement, offering a soporific listening experience that showcases the range of the artist’s sound.
“L=∅” takes the EP somewhere darker by trading some of the atmospheric qualities of its predecessor for a heavier and more abrasive sound that explores an emotionally unsettling descent through the mind of a fictional character whose life is thrown into turmoil after losing their job. As frustration turns into disappointment, the character gradually adopts an increasingly nihilistic worldview, convincing themselves that nothing truly matters captured in an enthralling sound brimming with punching drums, gripping synths and intense vocal transmissions.
Closing the EP with “0%,” the sweep of murky, droning tones forms a stripped back soundscape as intricate layers are gradually introduced. Intimate vocals glide in above elegant piano touches to craft a mellow and blissfully melodic finale to Kai Moa’s incredible debut EP. The music doesn’t end with the recordings, with live performance and improvisation in particular remaining fundamental to the artist’s creative identity. He plans to bring Some of My Best Friends Are…Electric Sheep into a live setting, with the potential to tour the EP around the UK and if the recordings are anything to go by, that could be where Kai Moa’s enveloping sound becomes most impactful.
