Coming out of London, The Bulletproof Souls is an exciting new band that lands where music, fiction and visual identity collide. Revolving around grit, melody and stories about people struggling to say what they really mean, the British rock act brings together heartland rock, alternative rock, soul and occasional blues influences. Their songs can take the shape of emotive ballads, driving guitar tracks or darker late-night pieces, but each retains the same sense of character and emotional context.
The Bulletproof Souls are also a band with an unusual origin story; born from the pages of British crime novelist and songwriter J W Neville’s The Bulletproof Souls, the project began as a fictional band before stepping beyond the boundaries of the novel and into the real world. That journey from fiction to reality is reflected in a project that feels thoroughly cinematic, offering music that’s compelling, human and highly memorable.
Noir imagery and the recurring figure of Clown Shoes Man create a visual language built around humour, damage and determination, giving the project a unique character while the songs themselves follow a similar philosophy, focusing on ordinary people, difficult emotions and the experiences that leave their mark. Every lyric is written by Neville, with the songs brought to life through session vocal performances, his creative direction and AI-assisted instrumental production. The swagger of Thin Lizzy and atmosphere of The Blue Nile provide inspiration for a project that’s ultimately interested in real life experience and enduring musical moments.
First unveiling their sound in March with the debut single “Big Clown Shoes,” they’ve since delivered an expansive catalogue across multiple singles, EPs and their first full-length record, Unmasked. Now they bring us their latest release with their brand new EP titled The L Word: Love Is Hard, a five-track outing that provides the perfect run through of the band’s engaging musical vision.

The lead single and opening track, “The L Word,” thematically explores why saying something as simple as love can become so difficult when the word carries enormous emotional impact. Revolving around an expressive vocal performance, intricate guitars and punching drums, the song serve up an anthemic pop-focused rock outing brimming with catchy vocal leads and heartfelt songwriting. Dashed with delicate piano flutters and cut with slick lead guitar work, it’s an epic musical experience that’s timeless, enjoyable and highly affecting all at once.
“Love Is Hard” follows with the soft flicker of bluesy guitar notes before slipping into a downtempo jam of soulful vocal leads, tapped percussion and dazzling instrumentation. Breezy flashes of guitar notes, warm bass tones and elegant piano touches combine to form a stunning soundscape before the arrangement builds with mellow rock energy as graceful vocals glide above to cast an enchanting sound that’s impossible not to love.
With “Bulletproof,” the band’s knack for moving songwriting continues with a misty atmosphere of soothing guitar work and alluring vocalisations. Crafting an intimate sound of soft percussion and hushed vocals, it’s a superb showcase of The Bulletproof Souls’ charming musical output. A live version of “The L Word” follows, capturing the song performed in front of a crowd which sees the band bring the song alive on stage in spectacular fashion.
Closing the EP with the full band rendition of “Love Is Hard,” The Bulletproof Souls reframes the track with a stellar arrangement that places the beautiful songwriting in a new setting. The L Word: Love Is Hard ultimately feels like a natural continuation of the story The Bulletproof Souls began telling when a fictional band stepped out from the pages of a novel. It’s an incredible new EP from a thrilling new band that’s showing no signs of slowing down and we can’t wait to see what the next chapter entails.
