Creativity has never been about following a perfectly mapped route for UK-based songwriter Donna Jame, it’s emerged gradually through fragments of everyday life, from a lyric captured in passing to a melody found between moments or an idea left waiting until the right time to become something more. VelumVelvet is the artistic moniker born from that process, representing the quiet confidence that comes with finally allowing imagination to step into the light.
VelumVelvet’s sound is driven by a fascination with the extraordinary hidden inside ordinary moments and Jonna’s songwriting takes the details that might otherwise disappear into the background and transforms them into vivid emotional scenes. A neon rose, a morning cup of tea or a brief moment can become the starting point for a song, carrying with it a sense of nostalgia, intimacy and meaning. These images become part of a creative language through which memory, imagination and reinvention can coalesce into meaningful musical moments.
VelumVelvet is also the persona through which Donna steps fully into that artistic world; years of hidden ideas and private creativity are brought into the open, transforming fragments that once existed in isolation into a growing catalogue of songs. That openness extends into the music itself where softness can sit alongside strength, emotion can exist alongside confidence, while memories meet the possibility of new beginnings. Donna finds inspiration in unexpected places, embracing accidents, inside jokes and the playful chaos that can turn an unplanned moment into a heartfelt creative idea, giving VelumVelvet a sense of movement, with each song capable of becoming another room within its expanding emotional landscape.

The project made its artistic entrance earlier this year with the debut double single âDevotion,â followed by a string of releases that have connected with fans across the UK and beyond. Now, Donna James turns towards a particularly personal chapter with âWomanâs Burden,â a song that explores contrast, challenge and the development of the VelumVelvet world itself. Born from a poem she wrote back in 2011, âWomanâs Burdenâ traces the story of Donna James and the place she has created through VelumVelvet. At the centre of that world is the VelumVelvet house of emotions, an imaginative space in which every song occupies its own room and carries its own emotional identity.
With this release, she enters the Room of Release, a space shaped around the movement from feeling trapped towards the possibility of sunlight and freedom. The song was brought to life with Airgigs, who contributed to the piano, strings and production, helping give form to the emotional contrast at its centre. Set up by the elegant flutter of piano and sweep of airy strings, the song flows glides with Donna’s graceful vocals, casting a mesmeric and highly affecting listening experience.
With delicate melodies and picture painting lyrics, the song progresses with tender vocal delivery, cinematic aesthetic and dazzling instrumentation, crafting a transportive and engaging sound that’s impossible not to be moved by. âWomanâs Burdenâ becomes part of the mythology of VelumVelvet itself, a song inhabiting the Room of Release while revealing something about the person behind the persona. It’s where the private and public sides of Donna Jamesâ creativity meet, connecting a poem written years ago with the artistic world she’s now openly building. Through it all, the cloak of VelumVelvet remains present, accompanying the listener through the journey and offering a sense of safety within a world where even the smallest everyday detail can become the beginning of something extraordinary.
