Music has been a constant presence long before Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, producer and musician Zo Burton began preparing to introduce himself as a solo artist. Originally from Arkansas, Zo’s relationship with sound started in childhood, growing up as a preacher’s kid and finding his first musical education within the church. By the age of three, he was already playing keys by ear, displaying an innate connection to melody that would eventually lead him to discover he had perfect pitch. It was an early beginning that would help shape a musical vision built on versatility and an appreciation for the emotional power of a song.
Outside the church, Zo was surrounded by a family of music lovers, with musicians among his relatives and a soundtrack that stretched across gospel, blues, funk and hip hop. Not encouraging him to settle into a single tradition, this varied upbringing gave him the freedom to explore different sounds and influences before eventually finding his home in R&B. That openness remains a central pillar in his output today, allowing him to draw from different eras while exploring his own unique creative expression.
His musical style is based in melody, warm vocal harmonies and heartfelt songwriting, bringing together the familiar tone of classic R&B with the impact of modern production. It’s a deft balance that gives his work room to feel at once timeless and cutting edge, reflecting an artist whose influences are wide-ranging but whose work remain entirly his own. Although Zo may be arriving with his debut this autumn, the music represents the result of years spent developing his talents away from the spotlight. For a long time, he kept his own songs close, writing and recording while allowing life to provide the experiences and perspective they needed.

Now approaching a new chapter, he’s ready to bring that personal world into view, beginning with his debut single titled “space,” unveiling his original sound in spectacular fashion. Released just days before his 30th birthday, “space” opens the first window into the sound he’s been quietly building over his whole life. Driven by a sticky melody and carefully stacked harmonies, the track draws on the emotional contxt and musicianship associated with late-90s and early-2000s R&B, while keeping its production firmly tethered to the present.
It’s an introduction that connects his affection for the genre’s enduring qualities with a contemporary vibe, giving the song an accessible magnetism while offering something thoroughly new. Opened by soft key tones and sparse percussive taps, Zo’s alluring vocalisations drift above twinkling instrumental notes before the crisp snap of the beat injects a gentle rhythmic sway as pulsing bass tones add to the laid back groove. Gliding with soulful vocal leads carrying poignant, picture painting lyrics, the track flows with dreamy aesthetic, hypnotic rhythmic energy and dazzling vocal performance, offering a stunning indie R&B jam that’s sure to win over listneers around the world.
Putting his songwriting flair and performance panache on full display, “space” sees Zo deliver the first taste of a musical vision that’s been a lifetime in the making. Brimming with sonic charm, memorable melodic writing and engaging groove, it’s a superb showcase of an artist making his emphatic arrival as a must watch name on the rise. With more releases planned, Zo Burton is only beginning to reveal the full range of his sound and the world he intends to build around it. His early musical origins, diverse influences and knack for melody have all contributed to a sound that moves flickers between generations of R&B and we can’t wait to see what else he’s got in store on what’s sure to be his breakout year.
