Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, The Burton D’Agostini Procedure is a musical duo whose creative partnership stretches back to their university days. Jeff Burton and John D’Agostini first met at Central Michigan University, eventually forming their first band together when they were just eighteen years old. Since then, the pair have continued to explore a shared passion for psychedelic sounds and alternative music, developing an output that draws on decades of musical history captured in modern production.
Their project, often referred to as BDP, revolves around the idea that listening can be an immersive experience, with carefully considered arrangements and stereo techniques inviting audiences to get lost in the details. The duo’s musical vision reflects a wide array of influences, from the expansive psychedelia of Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues to the more modern alternative sounds of The Flaming Lips, Foster The People, Cage The Elephant and MGMT. By not limiting themselves to one particular era or style, The Burton D’Agostini Procedure bring together elements from across the musical spectrum, creating a sound that moves between the exploratory spirit of the 60s and the sounds of more recent alternative music.
Having supported several touring bands over the years, the pair have developed their musical partnership through sustained involvement in the industry. That experience has helped inform a project that places as much emphasis on the listening environment as on the songs themselves. Subtle layers, carefully constructed sonic textures and the relationship between sounds across the stereo field all contribute to the duo’s ambition to create records that present a truly enveloping listening experience.

Last year they unveiled their shared sonic vision with the debut record The Rollercoaster Effect, which they’ve since followed up with a string of well-received releases. Now, lifted from their latest album, Standing with a Ghost, their new single titled “Strange Condition” serves up an immersive listening experience perfect for the Halloween season. Opened by the flicker of soft instrumental notes, the bubble of airy tones is met by the steady pulse of drums and build of grooving guitar lines, forming a slick rock scene tinged with psychedelic vibes.
With laid back vocal leads spinning storytelling lyrics, hazy instrumental textures swirl above the punch of drums as the blend of grooving riff-driven energy and chiming tones crafts an engrossing soundscape that’s transportive, hypnotic and highly original from start to finish. With a mellow rock energy running throughout, the track flows through a smokey atmospheric passages where intricate flutters of guitar tones add dashes of colour to the arrangement, resulting in an engaging jam that’s memorable and wrapped in an eerie aesthetic.
It’s a superb display of the band’s highly original songwriting flair, performance panache and readily apparent musical chemistry that’s been years in the making. A prolific soni partnership that began at eighteen has since bloomed into a continuing exploration of psychedelic and alternative music. With The Rollercoaster Effect mapping out their shared direction and Standing with a Ghost providing the backdrop for their latest single, The Burton D’Agostini Procedure continue to bring different musical eras together in spectacular fashion and we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store next.
