Music has always been a natural language that began long before UCHAYE had the words to explain what she wanted to express. Born in Alton, Illinois, to Nigerian-Zimbabwean parents and now based in Minneapolis, the artist first discovered her affinity for melody at just two years old, attending Mommy-and-Me music classes. A Montessori education encouraged her to explore creativity through instruments, movement and sound, while taking up the violin in her school orchestra at seven introduced her to the discipline of classical music. Those first musical steps would lead to an artist whose work now channels the pure energy of modern rock, combining a knack for melody with a growing confidence in her own storytelling.
Although classical training helped inform her musical understanding, UCHAYE’s artistic output began to take its current form during the pandemic. Returning to the guitar, she started recording at home and writing and producing original material, discovering a creative freedom that would become central to her vision. Much of her music continues to arise from her bedroom studio, where a melody might develop from the rhythm of a conversation, a guitar phrase or a lyric saved on her phone. These fragments become the starting points for songs that draw on real life experiences, stories shared by friends, films and passing thoughts, balancing spontaneous ideas with a careful sense of restraint.
An important influence on that development has been her mentorship with Shaun Fleming, the musician, producer and voice actor also known as Diane Coffee. His work includes voice acting in films including Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch and The Lion King, alongside an acclaimed glam rock and indie career that includes an NPR Tiny Desk performance. Working together in the studio multiple times a week, Shaun helped UCHAYE develop her songwriting, arrangements and production, encouraging her to trust her instincts while emphasising musicianship and emotional expression above all else.
Her musical interests stretch across classical, jazz, bossa nova, afrobeat, afro-jazz, rock, pop and house, with a particular interest in understanding how timeless music uses harmony, arrangement and story. At present, however, her focus centres on a modern rock sound informed by the 80s, drawing inspiration from David Bowie, Paul McCartney, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Jett, Lenny Kravitz and Toto. That background provides a setting for UCHAYE’s own work, where gritty guitars and memorable hooks meet a biting sense of emotional intensity.
Now, her debut EP titled WAR IS OV3R brings these elements together in a five-track concept record that follows one protagonist through the aftermath of a relationship. The release traces a more complicated progression through denial, escape, ambition and eventual rebirth to deliver UCHAYE’s most complete statement to date, using a continuous tale to explore how emotional devastation can reshape a person’s sense of identity. The story begins with “Denial (Interlude),” an atmospheric introduction that places the listener directly inside the wreckage to come, where airy guitar notes drift alongside alluring vocalisations and pattering percussion to craft an enveloping one minute opener.

“Denial” then explores a character unable to accept a relationship’s end, clinging to memories until the desire to remain unforgettable begins to blur the boundary between fantasy and reality. Its emotional landscape is obsessive and unsettling, presenting heartbreak as something capable of becoming consuming, wrapped up in a riff-driven rock affair that rolls with intricate rhythms before bursting into an anthemic rock scene brimming with impassioned vocals, crunching guitars and slick lead flourishes.
On “Survive Survive,” the smoke begins to clear, as driving guitars and emotion accompany the realisation that the person being held onto no longer matches the truth, turning the song into an act of separation and reclaimed control. Flowing with a catchy pop punk vibe, the track charges with uptempo energy and infectious vocal leads, serving up an exhilarating musical moment that’s sure to leave a lasting impression with anyone who hears it. “Currency” moves the story into another stage of transformation and with love no longer the objective, the protagonist turns towards wealth, success and ambition, attempting to fill the resulting emptiness through power. Distorted guitars, danceable groove and unapologetic confidence give the track its impact while showcasing UCHAYE’s vocal performance flair.
The closing “Live Wire” delivers the EP’s most explosive release, combining blues rock with anthemic modern energy, drawing on UCHAYE’s guitar influences, including Jimi Hendrix to transform the earlier songs’ pain and uncertainty into confidence, freedom and movement. Stacked with heavy guitar grooves and punching drums capped by belted vocal leads, it’s an epic finale that puts UCHAYE’s enthralling modern rock sound on full display.
With a rapidly growing online presence and performances at Twin Cities venues and festivals including Paisley Park and First Avenue, UCHAYE is already building a substantial audience around her work. WAR IS OV3R offers a compelling introduction to the creative vision behind that momentum, capturing an artist drawing on musical history while using rock’s power, melody and emotional context to tell a story of destruction and renewal.
Commenting on the release, she shares, “WAR IS OV3R is about transformation and how the things that break us can ultimately shape who we become. The record moves through heartbreak, denial, survival, and ambition before arriving at something greater: freedom. But beyond the music, it’s also a reflection of my own journey, the fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt I’ve had to overcome to get here. They say there are no winners in war, and I think the greatest victory is realizing you no longer have to fight yourself. By the time we reach Live Wire, it’s no longer about surviving. It’s about becoming everything you were meant to be. The war is over. Now it’s time to take over”
