A collaboration between the award-winning musician, composer and visual artist Bernhard Hollinger and designer and media artist Markus Homeier, hollinger + moono is a fiercely original artistic duo hailing from Berlin. Having been involved in various different music projects, the pair originally formed in 2018 under the Southern Modulation Laboratory alias.
Inspired by the positive feedback from their first performances together, they worked on a joint album in mid-2019 through to early 2020 and during the course of the album’s launch they rebranded themselves as hollinger + moono. “2020 was an important phase for us, as we were able to consciously test and further develop our material through experimentation and further live performances at the Lo-Fi Playground Ambient Picnic, among others,” they share.
Now they’re back with their latest work, a Bandcamp and cassette exclusive release, the new mini-album Reflections sees the duo build on their modern ambient sound. The organic compositions combine digital sound sources, algorithms and acoustic instruments to create vast and atmospheric soundscapes of hypnotic sonic texture. Across the five tracks, hollinger + moono deliver a blissful exploration of calming sparse music that’s equally peaceful as it is engaging.
Commenting on the new album, they offer, “This album is the result of a two-year process of reflection and tuning into our senses and emotions. We felt we needed to create something light yet profound, encouraging the listener to return to a fundamental level of beauty and connection that we all secretly seek – in times when we seem overwhelmed and constantly on the edge.”
