LA-based Allie Alvarado is a Honduran-American electro-pop artist and producer who’s been making a name for herself with her unique melody-driven arrangements, grooving rhythms and mesmerising vocal work. With an ever-evolving sound, she’s also written under other solo aliases such as Painted Face and Princesa, appeared with renowned artists Beth Ditto and School of Seven Bells as well as being credited for a feature with Alvin Risk on the 2016 Worldwide Broadcast for Skrillex’s label OWSLA.
With her own music as Allie Alvarado, she offers a fiercely original hyper-pop sound full of complex instrumental arrangements and shifting rhythmic dynamics, all tied together with her soaring vocal delivery. Lyrically she reflects on the events of this new decade and the changing global landscape with her yearning to find purpose in the face of loss and transformation taking forefront focus in her writing.
Now she brings us her most recent release with the new EP titled Strong. The four-track EP showcases a blast through her visionary sonic mind, full of colourful synth work and ethereal harmonies to create a captivating listening experience that’s both catchy and intriguing.
Commenting on the release, she offers, “Originally, I was going to call this EP ‘Feel the Earthquake’ which is one of the tracks because that’s what I felt like I was doing while writing these songs. I was feeling the ground beneath my feet rumble and open, and at the time wondering if I was going to get swallowed up whole along with it.”
Adding, “But like every journey, you hope to find meaning and you hope to survive and sometimes you have to keep going even if there’s no happy ending in sight. So many of us have lost so many things in the last few years and it’s going to take time to heal.”
With Strong, the artist takes a dive in the concepts of love, loss and traversing a world when your ideas of a happy ending don’t always come to fruition. Written during the hard times of the height of the pandemic, the EP serves as a soundtrack for anyone going through difficult moments. Anthemic and uplifting, with her new release Allie Alvarado once again shows why she’s an already accomplished artist that’s going from strength to strength.
“Participating in the music industry as a producer who is a first generation immigrant, and a woman of colour, it feels like my very existence is an act of resistance. Just participating is radical because there is a lack of representation out there. It’s easy to feel like an imposter sometimes but I’ve learned not to compare myself to the status quo and just do what I do because I love doing it,” she adds.
