New music from Koalra

Hailing from Chicago and recently moved out to Portland Koalra is a four-piece alternative rock outfit that fuse fuzz-fueled guitars and loose rhythms to create their unique sound. Predominantly influenced by the music of the 90s, they draw inspiration from artists like Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth and The Cure to make their ambitious music.

With their self-titled debut album released at the end of 2019, they offered an uplifting noise-fest of thrashing guitar work and grungy melodic leads. Following that, they switched their focus to a more introspective style with the EP Surprise Lights, inspired by the increasing uncertainty of the world around us.

Since then they’ve built on this new direction with tracks such as “The Wakes”, “Hold On” and “Lifting”, experimenting with new textures and sonic outlook to develop their sound further. After moving to Portland and being surrounded by creative people, their lineup saw new additions which sparked the energy for their next album Love Songs To Remind Us That We Can’t Stand Each Other which featured a collection of love songs themed on the current disenchantment of the social and political climate.

Most recently however they’ve once again shown the extent of their creative vision with the new release When The Dust Settles. Their latest release is a mini-album that focuses on ‘Kraut’ style music with four expansive 10 minute tracks that take time to develop and build a truly kaleidoscopic tapestry that deliveres something entirely new.

On When The Dust Settles, Koalra demonstrate they’re a band that shows no fear in pushing the boundary of their work and in doing so, reveal an act that’s a must-watch for anyone who’s looking for originality in the alternative rock space.
