Formed in 2018, My Friend The Chimpanzee is the musical collaboration between producers Josef Umschaid and Lukas Wieser. With Josef providing drums and fx and Lukas on strings and synths, together they create a unique style of synth-drenched indie pop. Full of vivid analog synths, driving beats and bright melodic writing, they offer an infectiously catchy modern electronic pop sound like no other.
Having met via Lukas’ former rock band Lunatic Lightsaber when Josef was at the time studying audio engineering and needed musicians for a class project, Lukas and his band were the willing guinea pigs. Following the split of Lunatic Lightsaber, the pair continued working together, building their collection of musical gear and gravitating towards more electronic spheres.
Drawing influence from artists such as Alt-J, Beastie Boys, Moby, Modest Mouse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smiths, Wyclef Jean and many others, they blend the genres and styles of their inspirations to create a kaleidoscopic and colourful sound. Guitar and bass guitar form the basis of their music, with indie pop style synths and vocal leads and hip hop and trap rhythms all colliding on a truly original offering.
Producing their music in Josef’s studio, the duo released their introduction with the debut single “Time Traveller”, the first track from their upcoming record. Following up with their sophomore single, they bring us the song “I Love This Place”, a track inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s play ‘No Exit’.
On “I Love This Place”, My Friend The Chimpanzee capture the perfect window into their expansive creative vision. Atmospheric and engaging, on their second single they spin an epic sonic tapestry of winding synth work, crunchy and snapping percussion and lofty vocal leads carrying gripping lines.
