Canadian artist Soran lives, eats and breathes music. Weaving music into every moment of his live, he sleeps with water sounds playing gently in the background and always has his laptop set up on the tour bus to be able to make tunes when traveling.
Following in the footsteps of the 1960s anime hero he was so aptly named after, his mission is clear; to make music wherever it takes him, driven by his unwavering dedication. Over the last few years he’s dropped a bunch of singles and a full-length with 2018’s eponymous album.
Constantly developing his sound and his offering as an artist, his music has evolved with his explorative concoction of alternative R&B mixed with lo-fi spaced out electronics and his trademark smooth vocal work. Now signed to Universal Music Canada – a demonstration of the artist’s talent and potential as the country’s leading music company – he now brings us his latest work with the new EP, titled Space Boy.
The Toronto-based artist shares the poignant and intergalactic EP featuring 5 original tracks that showcase the very best of his unique sonic vision. Continuing to use his music as a vehicle of helping uncover and discover who he is as a person, his musical fragments act as pieces in a puzzle that he re-arranges to reveal a coming of age story like no other.
The release not only marks the return of the artist but takes on an extra profound sense of meaning as an ode to his late mother who sadly passed away. A truly authentic creative, he opens himself up on Space Boy, sharing his vulnerabilities in intimate style with his listeners.
EP opener and title track “Space Boy” holds particular emotive sentiments to Soran, with the artist explaining, “That song means so much to me. My mom named me after the anime Space Boy Soran. In Japanese, there are three different alphabets. She decided to write my name as ‘Universe’ in Japan. Lyrically, it’s about a character who goes out to save the world.”
Continuing, “It’s ironic, because I’m doing all of the things that she wanted me to do now, but she’s gone. It sounds like me, yet so much of it is my mom. I find a way to celebrate her in every song.”
