Hailing from the Austrian capital Vienna, My Friend The Chimpanzee is the collaborative project between two producers Josef Umschaid and Lukas Wieser. Bringing their own unique styles and talents to the table, together they create fiercely original synth-based music that’s made them a force of indietronica in Vienna and beyond.
Originally meeting via Lukas’ former rock band Lunatic Lightsaber, when that outfit split the two artists continued working together and their own project began to truly blossom. With nods to their rock roots felt throughout their sound, they blend an array of genres and styles to deliver their creative vision.
Guitar and bass still feature in their music, but at the forefront is their expert command of analogue synth instruments which adds a futuristic touch to their sound. With influences such as Alt-J, Moby, The Smiths, Wyclef Jean and many more, they fuse elements of indie pop with hip hop style rhythms to offer something entirely new.
Making their introduction last year with their debut single “Time Traveller”, then following up with their sophomore track “I Love This Place”, they now share their latest work with the new single “Twin Moons/Bearwolf, Pt. 1”. As with the majority of their work, their writing process involves jamming on synths to find a sound they like. Building the song out from there, they made the decision to base the lyrics on the Japanese author Haruki Murakami’s novel 1Q84.
With their new single they share the very best of their frantic synth-led sound, full of pounding beats and delicate vocal leads that carry lofty and euphoric melodies. The pair also have an alternate version set to drop next month with different instrumentation to fully capture the theme of ‘twin moons’.
