Hailing from Colombia and now based in London, producer Camilo Toston creates stunning electronic soundscapes under the moniker Departure. Pairing delicate beats with washy instrumental textures, his music offers blissful minimalism at the same time as truly euphoric moments.
Making his introduction as Departure last year with his debut track “Hipocampo”, he’s returned with the follow up and sophomore single titled “Calle 63”. The track is composed as an homage to his first home in Bogota where he grew up in a three story building occupied entirely by his own family.
Commenting on that period of his life, he shares, “If I was bored, I could just go downstairs and play with my cousins, if I was hungry I would just run upstairs and granny would give me enough food to feed a battalion. For a long time, I assumed this is how most people grew up, but with time I have come to realise how lucky I was to have such a happy upbringing surrounded by such a big loving family.”
Looking back on that time with a new perspective and a sense of warm nostalgia, with his sonic tribute he offers a chilled out and upbeat sound that draws you in with its atmosphere and charms with its alluring melodic charisma.
Released as the first of a set of five tracks dropping throughout this year, “Calle 63” was heavily influenced by the track and music video for “Cómo Te Quiero” by Khruangbin which plays out the final moments shared between grandfather and his granddaughter as he passes away. “I felt the overall mood of the song and its guitar part transported me to the same headspace I wanted Calle 63 to take me, a place of both peace and happiness, yet tainted with nostalgia and melancholy,” the artist offers.
Capturing that transportive feeling in his sound, on “Calle 63” Departure lays down an immersive organic piece full of elegant rhythm and gentle guitar lines that are in equal parts energising and soporific.
