Hailing from The Belgian capital of Brussels comes the multi-talented artist Sara So Far. A jazz singer, composer, live loop artist, pianist and poet she wears many hats, combining the fruits of her various artistic pursuits to create her own fiercely original music.
At the core of her sound is her harmonic writing and rhythmic ideas which stem from her background and passion for jazz music. Paired with bold explorations of other styles of music and her love for words, she spins deep and intriguing songs that touches on themes such as the contradictions of life, relationships, climate change and current affairs as well as penning more abstract philosophical musings on noise, silence and courage.
Towards the end of last year she released a new album, titled Earth which showcased a stunning journey through her unique sonic lens. Full of colour and tribal a cappella rhythms, with Earth Sara So Far delivered an ambitious body of work that laid down a sound that deserved to be consumed slowly, contemplated upon and returned to once again.
Now she returns with her new single, the track “Keep On”. The new song was inspired by one of the artist’s friends who posted ‘Just keep walking!’ on social media while going through a great deal of struggle at the time. Feeling those words resonate powerfully with herself and admiring the braveness and optimism of her friend, Sara So Far’s creative flair was ignited and so “Keep On” was born.
The arrangement of the track features no instruments at all, rather a group of the artist’s friends came together to record their crowd stomps, claps and shouts to build the skeleton of the score. While creating a powerful and moving sound, the arrangement also serves as a metaphor for community, support and a positive outlook of overcoming hurdles while helping each other to do so.
Above the punching rhythm of the group, Sara So Far lays down a commanding vocal performance that holds the entire melodic composition with ease. Given space in the track to soar, the lyrics feel especially poignant, demonstrating the very best of a thoughtful writer at the top of her game.
