Formed last summer in the city of Portland, Oregon, Gyats0 is an indie rock outfit created by frontman, guitarist and songwriter Jacob Kiely-Song, dummer Tom Higgins, bass player Will Devitt, Danny Charvat on keys, and completed with vocalist Olivia Phillips and guitarist Ethan Kelner. Together, the six-piece band make their own original sound of alternative art rock music.
Originally started when Jacob approached housemates Tom and Danny to enquire about backing musicians for one of his shows, Will was also staying at the house and heard Jacob’s newly released track “Drift” and proposed the idea of joining the band too. Throughout the summer they performed several live shows and linked up with Olivia and Ethan from the scene to fully set the line up of Gyats0.
Taking influence from artists from the past and present such as Wilco, Fleetwood Mac, Hole, Soundgarden, Modern Baseball, Sonic Youth, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Phoebe Bridgers and Slowdive, Gyats0 offer a nostalgic indie rock sound that bends from folk to pop styles. Always full of their emotive writing and melodic vocal leads, Gyats0 makes music to soundtrack your good days as well as your bad.
Earlier this year, they headed to Brooklyn, New York to record their latest full-length. Working with engineer Chris Gilroy, they recorded their new album, Heartacher, live at Douglass Recording Studios released via the vnrose imprint. Lifted from the album is the closing track, titled “Safe”, a song written about the reflection on a depressed and suicidal episode many years later.
Pairing a sobering, but ultimately positive outlook that shares happiness about being here still no matter how hard things get, the song features an energetic and sometimes frantic arrangement including a last minute sax refrain in the crescendo of the song. Sharing the very best of their piquant creative vision, “Safe” offers an intimate connection with an exciting band to watch this year and beyond.
