Nashville-based artist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Lee Trent is originally from Martinsville, Virginia but moved to the music capital of Tennessee to pursue his dreams of working as a musician and songwriter. After spending years cutting his teeth as an arranger and instrumentalist for other artists, he’s using his vast experience to launch himself as a solo act in his own name.
Along the way he’s worked with artists such as Pat Sansone (Wilco), Michael Klooster (Smash Mouth), John Mailander (Bruce Hornsby, Billy Strings) and graced stages at prestigious festivals such as Roo Refugee, Front Porch Fest as well as venues all over the USA. With his own music, he takes influence from artists such as Radiohead, Thundercat and Wilco to offer an original indie pop sound full of catchy rhythmic writing and brought to life by his unique creative flair.
Making his solo debut at the start of last year, his first studio recording “Optimism” set the tone for his style with an upbeat and infectious dreamy pop song. Now back with the follow up, the poignantly titled single “Pessimism” provides an apt contrast to his first outing.
Not only juxtaposed in name, the two tracks are sonically stark opposites when sitting alongside each other. Reflecting the nature of their respective context, with “Pessimism” Lee Trent strips back the polished modern pop sound to lay down a more minimal piece that leans towards indie folk rock in its aesthetic and writing.
Produced at his Nashville home studio by the artist alongside friend and producer Brett Hoffman, “Pessimism” is penned about a man experiencing relationship troubles only to be left by his significant other and be left in a pessimistic mindset. With his latest offering, Lee Trent demonstrates the breadth of his talent in creating a song that spins a wildly different tone and listening experience to his debut.
