gloomy june is a California a four-piece indie pop outfit on the rise. Having burst onto the scene earlier this year with their debut single “Save Anyone”, they’ve gone from strength-to-strength with each new move they make.
Comprised of singer Alexi Rose Belchere, guitarist Devin Nelson, bass player Jack Sundquist and Ash Hyatt on drums, they draw influence from the likes of The 1975 and Pale Waves. Tapping into the collective emotions felt in isolation by many, Belchere’s confessional lyrics spin vivid narratives that forge firm connections with their listeners.
Hailing from San Francisco, they take their name from the dreary fog that rolls in from the sea and engulfs their hometown at the start of summers. With their music, they offer an energetic and fiercely catchy indie pop sound that’s anthemic, sometimes queer and always tinged with a dose of tragic context.
Working together from late 2020, they’ve been writing a bunch of material throughout the pandemic and are now seeing their behind-the-scenes efforts pay off. They’ve just dropped their debut EP, titled Popsick which explores themes of social strife and anxiety, framed in an often strikingly relatable way and filtered through their own unique sonic lens.
Now halfway through a Southwest-wide tour in support of Popsick, the group shares the third and final lead single of the release, with the track “This Party Is A Warzone”. Featuring their trademark bouncy pop rock sound, the song was penned around the time music venues were opening back up, creating conflicted emotions of celebration and caution that collided in a frequently confusing fashion.
At the time of writing the track the band was going through an identity crises and moving on from their previous name The Y Axes, leaving the project in a state of limbo. Wanting to progress and evolve, but unsure exactly how, “This Party Is A Warzone” serves as a snapshot of that tension and the final closing of a chapter and marking their exciting new path as gloomy june.
