Swiss drummer and music producer Philippe Adam defines his project numeral as “a sonic universe of rumbling sub-basses, clever audio design and at times gloomy and dystopian landscapes, and a meticulous electronic music that draws on beat-driven electronica and vibrant ambient.”
Numerous Swiss indie electronic bands, such as The Lugubrious and Faux Tales, for whom he served as the drummer, inspired numeral to create his own producing techniques and sound palette. Sometimes moody atmospheres and at other times brilliant melodies are predominant in his particular work. The ability to manipulate sounds carefully and with great attention to detail is what gives numeral’s apocalyptic sound its full force.
A host of other musicians have influenced numeral’s work over the years, fluctuating between Bern, Switzerland, and Berlin, Germany, from musique concrète composers like Pierre Schaeffer and Edgard Varèse to modern IDM and down-tempo artists like Jon Hopkins, Rival Consoles, and even Four Tet.
Warm synths and a muted bass from “Mayhem” lift up its listeners for a daring and dance-filled journey. Before the energetic drop pushes you into another dimension, the harmonic progression builds density and briefly breaks down while the repeated kick rhythm initially keeps you grounded. You name it: tech house, melodic techno, electronica.
The CH label Blizzard Audio Club has released “Mayhem” as the second single from the upcoming Primeval EP.
