Hailing from Ottawa, Canada, Wotts is an indie pop duo formed by singer and multi-instrumentalist Jayem and guitarist and bass player Ricky. Together they combine to create their own brand of infectiously catchy music that blends elements of alternative pop, indie rock and lo-fi.
Since their debut single “97 Oakleys” released last year, they’ve been charming listeners and crowds with both their studio music and live performances. Gaining extensive radio airtime, they’ve had spins on Canadian stations such as CBC Radio as well as coverage on Metro News and PopMatters in the USA.
After having graced the stages of RBC Bluesfest, Canadian Music Week and Junofest, they’ve been dropping a string of singles this year. Recently they released “LEMONADE”, a track inspired by M83 and Empire of the Sun.
Sonically, the single lays down a breezy and laid back summer vibe but the lyrics tackle themes of breaking through tough times and getting over the hurdles of life. Reflected in the upbeat and graceful sound of the track, the message of optimism and determination to keep pressing on – even when you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel – shines through beautifully.
Produced by Jayem in Canada while Ricky was stuck outside the country during quarantine, the aptly titled “LEMONADE” captures the essence of ‘when life gives you lemons…’ woven into a summery indie pop hit. Focusing on the difficulties people can face in relationships and the perseverance required to overcome the tough times, Jayem shares, “It can be easy to leave a relationship if you hit a rough patch, especially if you have a tendency to build up walls to protect yourself. You can meet an amazing person and have some bad days, so this song is a reminder that it can be worth it to dig deep, battle the insecurities and take a leap of faith.”
Going from strength-to-strength with each new release, the track follows their previous single “DOMINO” and builds on their sonic offering, “I think we’re having a lot of fun with exploring new sounds and really trying to build an atmosphere with our music,” Ricky comments.
