Irish folk duo The Winter Codes is formed by the founding member of the remarkable folk punk outfit Blood Or Whiskey, Barney Murray and the virtuoso musician David Walshe. The pair take influence from classic Irish folk music and carry it into the modern day with their own take on the traditional style.
The Winter Codes have their upcoming album, titled Set The Darkness Reeling, lined up for release on the 1st of August, a record that draws on their vast experience as musicians and serves to demonstrate their love and devotion for the country and its rich musical heritage. Packed full of Irish folk classics, the album blends the timeless styles of the genre with The Winter Codes upbeat punk twist.
Commenting on the project, they share, “We got the idea to record an EP of five of our songs, and before we knew it we had an albums worth of material that became the Set The Darkness Reeling album.” The production of the album saw the band head to the renowned Grouse Lodge studio, which famously housed Michael Jacked as he recorded and lived there.
Not just an astonishing homage to their musical roots, the forthcoming LP is woven with touching tributes to the group’s fallen band member. Sadly passing away ten years ago, Paul Walshe who previously played alongside Barney and David, is immortalised in emotive fashion on the album, with several tracks even featuring his assured musicianship.
Ahead of the album launch, the duo have dropped the lead single, titled “Too Sly To Die”, building further excitement and anticipation in the build up to the full-length. Offering their energetic take on the style of music that they’ve mastered over the years, “Too Sly To Die” is the perfect taste of their upcoming record. Full of rhythm, catchy vocal lines and a classic arrangement of strings and percussion, their new single will find appreciation among fans of Richard Thompson, The Undertones and Bob Dylan as well as lovers of Irish and folk music.
