Wednesday’s Child are a band from London that most certainly epitomise the word ‘unconventional’. The trio combine jazz and punk with psychedelic rock, making the task of categorising them as impossible as it is not to notice and appreciate them and their musical pedigree.
During the numerous lockdowns in the U.K., songwriters Emily Roberts and Georgia Williams started working together. Such a varied sound becomes even simpler to understand when inspirations as diverse as John Cooper Clarke, The Beatles, Patti Smith, and Billie Holiday are considered. Despite the fact that Wednesday’s Child’s art contains echoes of the aforementioned, they represent no one other than themselves.
Following the publication of their debut EP in the fall, this is the band’s first single. “Begin Again”, the EP’s first song, already has a popular music video on websites like YouTube, and Tom Robinson of BBC Air 6 Music gave “Nearby Nowhere” a coveted radio play, describing it as “134 seconds of fresh, focussed DIY pop.”
The production “I Want You to Want Me” is as captivating as it is strangely unsettling. Though this song may be classified as a love song, the sense of romance and loving feelings are rarely as sweet as they are in other, more conventional love songs.
Wednesday’s Child expertly unleash the full intensity of these overwhelming feelings in I Want You to Want Me, with the music and lyrics taking continuous and unexpected turns throughout.
