On his expansive follow-up album Made By Thawing Ice, Seattle-born psychedelic rock experimentalist and accomplished producer Restless Mosaic defies tradition and expectation, completely at ease whilst expanding at breakneck speed in every direction.
Jon Ireson from Music-News.com perfectly described Restless Mosaic’s prior album as “a boon for your neuroplasticity”, “There’s Much Left to Explore”, the album’s melancholy and atmospheric opening single, was a commercial success, having been downloaded 180,000 times and the artist’s second album is guaranteed to provide its fans with another fantastic experience. The new album expands the project’s reach to include voice duets that are even more out-of-left-field than the instrumentals, while maintaining the mystery and ongoing genre-morphing love from the previous album.
Chilean singer Lili Aqvq treats us with her Spanish lyrics in the dark and theatrical tango “A La Cara Amarilla”, whilst Australian Dear Kristin portrays an actress fighting the 1970’s game show jazz/funk for space in “Multicam Behavioural Health”.
Other songs include “Sandbags on the Flood of My Insecurities”, an innovative, neoclassical production that defies categorisation, “Polliwog 1 & 6 7 8” unites thunderous dulcimers with clannish trance, “V of Mood” takes public television music and makes it cool, and “Shadwan” blends psy-trance with new age and ambient house music to create a sound that seems to make an indescribable genre of its own.
You can tell just by listening to Restless Mosaic’s music that this is an artist that is incredibly enthusiastic about the artistic process that goes into music production, utilising a variety of musical genres to get the greatest sounds for the job and having a ball while doing it. This really experimental new record should appeal to fans of musicians as diverse as Future Sound of London, Underworld, Aphex Twin, Oneohtrix Point Never, Four Tet, and Psychick Warriors of Gaia.
