Coming from Western North Carolina, Fantømex is a post-hardcore band with half the members living in Asheville and the other half residing in Moranton. Formed by lifelong friends, guitarist Isaac Crouch and drummer Edwin Mericle when they started jamming together, a practice that lasted several years until one day in 2017 they decided to formalise their musical partnership and start a new band.
The pair had played in two bands together during their high school years but for Fantømex they enlisted vocalist Abigail Taylor, bringing her intense and reflective lyrical writing to the mix. Soon after, the line up was completed with the addition of energetic bass player Max Miller and the four-piece began working on new original material.
Influenced by the likes of mewithoutYou, Frodus, At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, David Bowie, The Blood Brothers and many others, Fantømex offer their own high-octane hard rock sound, driven by intricate rhythms, highly technical guitar work and framed by impassion female empowerment. With their live shows, they bring their raw and raucous spirit to the stage to deliver a captivating performance that verges on the theatrical.
Now they bring us their second studio release with the new EP titled Terraformed. Featuring four original Fantømex tracks, across the EP, the band charge through their furious modern rock sound with blow after blow of fiery rock music carried by memorable and melodic vocal leads.
The first full release to see new bass player Max lay down his low ends, Terraformed marks a subtle shift towards a math rock sound for the band. The EP is the first of two sister releases with it set to be followed up by the second instalment EP Chimera in 2023.
