Hailing from Philadelphia, Diamond Blacc is a talented rapper making his own style of modern hip hop music. Taking influence from his own life experiences, with his music he seeks to empower, inspire and uplift listeners, threading a positive sense of optimism and hope into the fabric of his sound.
Making his introduction in November 2020, he dropped his debut single “Rollin'” and has since followed it up with a string of well-received tracks over the last couple of years, as well as his first EP, Shannon’s Son in 2021. Striking a chord with fans and tastemakers alike, and racking up tens of thousands of streams of his music along the way, he now brings us his latest release with his new cut titled “DEMONS”.
Laying down an uptempo hip hop sound, driven by a pacy snapping beat and whirling synth tones, he weaves his rapid, rhythm-perfect flow over the top. Creating a spiritual journey wrapped up in his unique sonic offering, on “DEMONS”, Diamond Blacc crafts profound lyricism that tackles not just the demons in the world in general, but the ones that affect everyone individually.
We caught up with the rising rapper to find out more about his musical journey and his latest single “DEMONS”. Check out our interview with Diamond Blacc below.
Hey Diamond Blacc, how’s things?
Hello there! I’m doing well, thank you! Staying busy and minding my music. Looking forward to the magic of the new year!
What was your highlight of 2022?
I would say the highlight of my 2022 was releasing my single “DEMONS”, produced by JDot.
How did you first get into making your own music?
Heartbreak, losing it all and honestly losing myself some years back first got me into making music. I needed relief from the state of my life at the time and I thank God it was through writing and music.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
There are so many great artists who have made impressions on me forever. I would say one of my fondest and earliest was watching Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard. I couldn’t have been anymore than 4 years old but I was captivated.
What’s the best thing about the Philadelphia music scene?
Philadelphia has such a diverse and underrated music scene. There is so much remarkable talent in this city! Do not sleep on Philadelphia!
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
Aaliyah, she has been my favorite, even before her untimely death. Her music, life and legacy impact me and people globally to this day. I think it’s special when an artist lets their work shine brighter than themselves. Aaliyah did that in such a special way.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
Life and my experiences inspire me everyday. I consider myself a person of faith so I look for the good in everything but I also accept and try to embrace the difficulties of life as best I can. There is so much to draw on and be inspired by in this life. I choose to keep my eyes open!
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
I make music for everyone, so you can listen anytime, anywhere and with whoever, WHENEVER! Music is meant to be digested and enjoyed as desired by all!
How did you find making your latest single “DEMONS”?
Making this song was perhaps one of the most arduous and difficult experiences of my life. From studio malfunctions, to lost files, to remakes and edits you name it! If you only knew how hard I have fought for this song! The best part of it all was getting to work with the incomparable Jdot on this song and to work with someone in music whose talent matches their kindness is incomparable! This journey has been worth it all and I am so grateful for the experience thus far!
What was the message you wanted to get across with this song?
I want people to believe in themselves and never give up regardless of how hopeless things may seem. I want people to have faith and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and the adversities we experience may hurt but make us stronger.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
Lately, I just listen to the classical station on WRTI Philadelphia. I find it easy on the ears.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
I want people to know that they matter, and they can do literally anything they put their minds too! I believe in them!
What’s been your favourite live show so far?
Performing in NYC in 2022 was definitely a dream come true!
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
I would honestly love to shut down Broad Street and have a straight up street performance. I’d bring all acts out of Philly from all generations and we would just have a good time!
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
To new artists… be fearless and create your own path. In addition to strengthening your craft, sharpen your mind, body and soul. Also please don’t compromise yourself!
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
You will have to wait and see!!!
