With her debut single “Right Person, Wrong Time,” New York-based artist Libby Johnston proves that age is just a number when it comes to creating compelling music. At just 23 years old, Johnston showcases a remarkable understanding of dreamy indie pop, backed by her captivating vocals and graceful sound.
Originally hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Johnston takes influence from artists such as Taylor Swift and MUNA as major inspirations for her sound and songwriting. While her music certainly shares similarities with her idols, Johnston’s debut single also showcases a unique style that’s all her own.
“Right Person, Wrong Time” is a song that explores the complex and often paradoxical nature of toxic relationships. Johnston describes the track as a way to process the emotions she experienced after being treated poorly by someone she still believed was good for her. The song’s dreamy electronic synth pop vibe sets the stage for a story of love and heartbreak, while Johnston’s vocals carry the listener through each emotional twist and turn.
Produced, mixed and mastered by Santino Cardinale, “Right Person, Wrong Time” boasts an instantly catchy rhythm that’s sure to get stuck in your head. Johnston’s vocals are layered beautifully over the track, creating a soundscape that’s both intimate and expansive. As the song builds to its climax, Johnston’s vocals become more and more powerful, evoking a sense of catharsis that’s sure to resonate with anyone who’s experienced a toxic relationship.
Despite its dark subject matter, “Right Person, Wrong Time” is ultimately a hopeful song. Johnston’s lyrics offer a sense of empowerment, reminding listeners that they hold the power to change their own lives and leave toxic relationships behind. With this debut single, Johnston has already proven herself to be an artist to watch in the indie pop scene.
While Johnston is still at the beginning of her music career, it’s clear that she has a natural talent for crafting compelling songs. Her debut single “Right Person, Wrong Time” is a promising start, showcasing her impressive vocal range and her original sonic vision. As she continues to grow as an artist, it will be exciting to see what Johnston comes up with next.
Overall, “Right Person, Wrong Time” is an impressive debut from an artist who clearly has a lot of potential. With its catchy rhythm, dreamy synths, and emotionally resonant lyrics, this single is sure to captivate listeners and leave them wanting more. If this is just the beginning for Libby Johnston, we can’t wait to see where she goes from here.
We caught up with her to find out more about her musical journey, her debut single and what she’s got lined up for the future. Check out our interview with Libby Johnston below.
Hey Libby, howās things?
Hey there! Busy but Iām counting my blessings to have so many cool things going on in my life right now.
How did you first get into making your own music?
I fought it for so long but one day, something just clicked and I gave myself permission to validate my thoughts and feelings through songwriting. Iām also very lucky to be friends with two artists that I really look up to – Joey Miceli and Santino Cardinale – Iām a major fangirl.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
Itās funny but I really do think that the peak era of Disney Channel shaped what kind of music I gravitate towards making and listening to. Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and of course, Taylor Swift. I know Taylor wasnāt technically a Disney girl but she was Disney adjacent so it still counts.
What do you love about the New York music scene?
Iāve always loved the energy of New York as the ambition and determination is so apparent here. The work ethic of New Yorkers is unparalleled and I love being motivated by the scene around me.
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
MUNA, Marina, Holly Humberstone, Chappell Roan – just to name a few.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
I have a lot going on in my brain at all times so I just pull from whatever hyper fixation I currently have or whatever Iām overthinking at the time. Itās a blessing and a curse but Iāve found songwriting has been so beneficial for my mental health.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
I canāt speak for my future releases as Iād love to experiment with my sound but for āRight Person, Wrong Time,ā Iād recommend listening late at night in your bedroom with some fun lights! Definitely a galaxy projector and/or lava lamp vibe.
How did you find making your new single āRight Person, Wrong Timeā?
To be honest, Iām still canāt believe I have a single. I loved every moment of making the song and I canāt wait for whatās next.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
You deserve better than second place. If they wanted to, they would.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
Ever since āThe Recordā came out a few days ago, Iāve been listening to boygenius on repeat. I adore Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus as individual artists so when they come together to create music, itās unreal. Oh, and Lana Del Reyās new album, āDid you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.ā I canāt stop listening to āMargaret (feat. Bleachers)ā – itās actually becoming a problem.
Whatās the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
Thereās no better feeling than listening to a song that resonates with you. Iād be honoured for anyone to connect with āRight Person, Wrong Timeā and for it to make them feel a little less crazy whilst going through the motions of a toxic situationship.
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
Itās actually happening in London in August and Iām so sad I wonāt be there to experience it: boygenius, MUNA and Ethel Cain.
Do you have any advice for a new artist just starting out?
Iām very much just starting out myself so Iām in no place to give out advice but I think itās so important to remember that youāre capable of doing anything you set your mind to.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
Lots and lots more writing and recording, and hopefully releasing my debut EP by the end of the year!
