Melbourne-based indie rock band The Window in Floyd returns with their latest single, “This Kiss,” a track that exemplifies their emphatic and captivating sound. The band effortlessly combines elements from rock, synth pop and alternative genres, resulting in a unique sonic experience that showcases their passion for guitar-based music, layered vocals, synthesisers and dance-inspired beats.
“This Kiss” follows in the footsteps of their previous release, “New York,” and further solidifies their evolving musical direction. Drawing influences from acclaimed acts like Arcade Fire, The Kills, Depeche Mode, Naked and Famous, and In the Valley Below, The Window In Floyd has crafted a balanced fusion of guitar and synth-oriented soundscapes.
The song opens with ethereal synth tones that float gracefully over a laid-back snapping beat and a grooving bass line. The introduction sets the stage for the outfit’s layered vocals, which become the focal point of the track. As the vocals intertwine, carrying stunning melodic leads, the energy builds and the song transforms into a moody indie rock anthem.
The Window In Floyd’s attention to detail is clear throughout “This Kiss.” Gritty guitar leads twang with intensity, adding depth and texture to the track. The marching rhythm provides a strong foundation, while the memorable melodic writing ensures that the song leaves a lasting impact on the listener.
“This Kiss” encapsulates the band’s ability to create an epic sound that commands attention. The band’s meticulous production and thoughtful songwriting shine through, resulting in a track which is both emotionally resonant and dynamically engaging. With each layer carefully crafted and executed, the song takes listeners on a sonic journey that is as thrilling as it is introspective.
As The Window In Floyd refines their live show in preparation for upcoming releases, “This Kiss” serves as a promising taste of what’s to come. The band’s ability to seamlessly blend genres and create a sound that’s uniquely their own sets them apart in the indie rock scene. With their passionate and evocative music, The Window In Floyd is poised to win over more audiences and establish themselves as an emerging force in the industry.

Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
First memory of music was my Mum, listening to The Carpenters on cassette in her car. Songs like Top of the World and We’ve only just begun, were on frequent rotation in the car.
I’m not sure I was old enough to appreciate music, but it certainly made a lasting impression, particularly the vocal melodies… Can still remember them, even though I’ve not listened to those tunes for over 30 years.
What’s your earliest memory of making music?
I cut out a cardboard guitar and made fake guitar strings from old roll of twine. Use to mime to 80’s music at school. Perhaps thats not really ‘making’ music… Early primary school music classes were certainly memorable, as was learning how to play piano at my grandmothers house.
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
A wide variety. Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Killers, The Kills, XX, Wolf Alice, Lana del ray, Bleachers, Prince, Inhaler, Death Cab, Tame Impala, Khrangbin, Anything with synth, guitar, a good beat and melody that is slightly off centre.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
Seeing other artists connect with their audience in a live setting. Life experiences, particularly travelling overseas. Anything I’m dealing with emotionally…. Music is like a therapist for me.
How did you get together as a band?
Classified ads online and mutual friends.
What do you love about the Melbourne music scene?
Heaps of musicians that you can meet. Plenty of live gigs and talented artists around all the time. Also people from overseas that come here to live just for the music scene – thats really nice to see.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
Live in an arena… second best option in the car travelling down a coastal highway or through a mountain range.
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
Yes. Started out with a guy called Richard. A guitar player and co writer on our first EP. He was into math rock and angular riff based guitar music… Since he left after the first ep I’ve been writing and producing on my own and favouring more synth based tunes with paired back guitar riffs. You won’t really hear the types of riffs that are on a tune like Hologram in the new material. The song New York is probably more indicative of the TWIF sound going forward…
How did you find making your new single “This Kiss”?
To be honest this tune was written and produced during the pandemic so it’s a few years old. I remember enjoying layering up all the synth sounds and harmonies.. I really enjoyed coming up with the guitar solo at the end. I’m not much of a guitar solo person, but recall sitting in my studio for a couple of hours writing the solo during lockdown… which was very liberating. Loved also having Loren our newest band member layer her vocal harmonies to the tune.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
New music is on its way from TWIF… this is the first of 6 singles that will be released over the next 6.months… its a new sound for TWIF compared to the last EP. We also have new live lineup and have been rehearsing hard with Dave on lead guitar, Loren on synths and backing vocals and James on drums. Looking forward to playing these new tunes live.
What sparked the change in sonic direction for this new track?
Departure of Richard from the band, which allowed me the freedom to write and produce more freely. No compromise needed!
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
The National, Death Cab for Cutie and Julien Baker.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
If it helps them process whatever they are going through… that would be amazing (and I think what most writers hope for)… but honestly they can take away anything they wish.
What’s been your favourite live performance so far?
Anna Calvi without a doubt… visceral and mesmerising.
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
Ooohhh love this question…
Hrmmm. Anna Calvi, Kraungbin and Arcade Fire. Playing at Minack Ampi-theatre in Cornwall (UK).
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
If I had to give that advice to my younger self, is… Surround yourself with people that are as passionate about music as you are. Be brave enough to follow your dream…
Work as hard as you can and believe.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
Releasing 6 more tunes and a bunch of live gigs. More writing!
