Emerging artist jazzygold once again charms listeners with her soulful and empowering sound on her latest release, her sophomore single titled “dyed my hair red.” Hailing from the Faroe Islands, this new on the scene alternative pop songstress is making waves with her unique blend of R&B and soul pop, crafting music that speaks to the experiences of a 20-something navigating the ups and downs of life’s complexities.
Following the success of her debut track, “boring like me,” jazzygold returns with another sleek and charming alternative R&B anthem. “dyed my hair red” covers the emotional journey of moving past the initial stages of sadness after heartbreak and embracing the second stage: anger. With raw honesty, jazzygold reveals that we all reach a breaking point where dying our hair red becomes a symbolic act of defiance and a temporary fresh start.
Enraged and heartbroken, jazzygold delivers a powerful and cathartic anthem that serves as the perfect breakup soundtrack. The song showcases her ability to blend R&B and pop seamlessly, creating an infectious and empowering sound. With her smooth and velvety vocals, her voice effortlessly glides above soft synth tones, building up the track’s momentum. As the first chorus hits, a punching beat, shimmering synth textures and deep bass take over, crafting a driving backdrop for jazzygold’s elegant and soulful vocals to soar above.
Through her music, jazzygold shares her authentic experiences as a woman of colour, aiming to provide representation and inspiration for younger generations. Growing up with few role models who mirrored her own experiences, she embarked on this project to break barriers and show the world that someone from the Faroe Islands can make their mark. She wants her music to resonate with listeners worldwide and serve as a reminder that despite our origins, we can achieve greatness and thrive in the real world.
In “dyed my hair red,” jazzygold truly confirms her status as an artist to watch. The track not only showcases her vocal talent but also highlights her ability to craft infectious melodies and lyrics that speak to the universal emotions we all encounter. With each note, she brings honesty and vulnerability to the forefront, creating a connection with her audience which is relatable and deeply personal.
With her sophomore single, she cements her place as an artist on the rise. As her music continues to win over audiences, jazzygold’s voice becomes a beacon of empowerment and representation, paving the way for others to embrace their true selves and find solace in the power of music. “dyed my hair red” is a testament to jazzygold’s talent, ambition, and determination. Hey jazzygold, how’s things?
Things are great! A lot of new beginnings happening lately. I just moved into a new house surrounded by the most beautiful nature. It’s a place where I can be in peace and be creative when I got to so that’s really nice.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
I think one of the artists that I remember made a lasting impression on me was Kendrick Lamar and especially the album ‘’To Pimp A Butterfly’’. I was 16 years old when that album got released and I already loved Kendrick Lamar so I was very excited to listen to it. While also in the meantime this was the time when I first started making my own music and writing my own lyrics. I just remember listening to that album one night and reading through all of the lyrics while listening to the album and tearing up. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything that honest and raw and yeah, I felt very inspired. Kendrick Lamar really is one of my favourite artists out there and I’ve seen him live three times now and I’m seeing him again this summer and I’m still just as excited as I first were when I saw him for the first time live.
What’s your earliest memory of making music?
As a kid I’ve always loved music and i’ve always loved getting to know the lyrics and being able to sing along to the music I listened to as good as possible, so already there it must have started. I actually didn’t write any of my own stuff until I was 15-16 years old cause I was too scared and not very confident.
Which artists do you draw the most inspiration from today?
I get inspired by so many artists it’s insane, so I’m gonna mention a few of them haha. Mahalia is one of the artists that I see myself through and I’m aiming to do the things that she’s doing in her career and I love how open about her feelings she is and her confidence. This Norwegian artist called Emilie Nicholas has inspired me so much and I’m so in love with how she records her vocals and harmonies. Kendrick Lamar has always inspired me and I’ve always been so blown away that you can make such masterpieces that he has done with his albums, he really knows how to tell a story all through the album and that’s so beautiful to see.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
Through myself, I mostly write about what I’ve personally experienced and then I love to maybe twist it a bit… I just feel like if I’m writing about what I know about and that the audience can feel that I’m trying to be honest with them, which is such an important thing for me.
What do you love about the Faroe Islands’ music scene?
I love that it feels like a family. Everyone is so supportive of each other and we’re all connected in some type of way. I mean I have people in my band that are my good friends as well and one of them has filmed behind the scenes for a project for me and someone else has filmed a music video for me, one of my best friends has made the graphics for all of my singles so it just feels like everything is intertwined and it’s so awesome that you get to work with people that are your friends.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
Either by yourself feeling emotional in your bed or in the club screaming your lungs out wit a drink in your hand, my music can do both.
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
I actually started out in a band called ‘’JASMIN’’ and I was in it from 2017-2022. So when I started out I was young and didn’t really know what I wanted to do yet and i sure as hell did not know who I was. And looking back on it now I don’t regret one single thing cause it made me who I am today, both personally and musically. I just really felt like the older I became and the more things I got to experience with the more I was finding out the sound that I really loved and believe me, I’m not done experiencing or trying new things out but with the jazzygold project I feel like I really love the music that I’m making and that’s so so important.
How did you find making your new single ‘dyed my hair red’?
I loved all of the process. It was a beautiful process, the song was basically written in one day. I travelled to Stockholm and made the song with my friends Kristofer and Ella and I had just dyed my hair red and Ella straight away got inspired by that so that’s basically how the process started. For me the colour red is a reflection of fire and being mad so yeah we built the song out of the words that came from the colour red. And honestly it felt like a release when we had written the song, it was like a therapy session cause I felt like all of my bitterness got released so yeah I totally recommend making music to talk about your feelings haha.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
That it’s okay being a mess and feeling like you wanna change your appearance to show that you’re starting over. It’s totally okay to be mad and sad. Someday you’ll get through it and if dying your hair red helps than you should dye you hair red.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
J.I.D and Rosalia! I’ve had their newest albums on replay for some while now. I recommend those albums to anyone who’s searching for new music.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
Hopefully they feel like they can relate and maybe some of them even feel like they’re being heard through my music.
What’s been your favourite live performance so far?
The funny thing is that I’ve only had 4 performances with the jazzygold project. Two of them being on Trondheim Calling which is a showcase festival in Norway and the other two shows being on the Great Escape in Brighton. All four shows happening over 2 months and if I have to choose one I think my debut concert at Trondheim Calling was a special one. I hadn’t released any of my music at that time but the room was still full of open and lovely people just absorbing my music, vibing, dancing, singing along and it felt like a dream.
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
THOUGH question! If I should pick then it would be Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish somewhere special on the Faroe Islands!
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Try and take care of yourself first, what I mean by that is that even though the music and the music business is important, your mental health and physical health should always be the number one priority. That way you can thrive with what you’re doing and gives you space to be creative when it comes to the music. I’m still trying to learn that.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
More singles and then I’m playing my debut concert on the Faroe Islands this summer on the G! Festival with a bigger live setup and I’m so excited!! After that we’re travelling to Norway to play my first headliner concert in Oslo at this place called Salt and then we’re travelling to Molde to play Moldejazz which also is my first official festival gig outside of the Faroe Islands. A lot of exciting things are happening and I’m all for it.
