KRISTOPHER the artistic banner of singer-songwriter Kristopher Houck, who’s known for delivering truly heartfelt and refreshingly honest music. Drawing on his background in psychology and years of experience in musical theatre and orchestral performance, KRISTOPHER combines his talents to create songs that explore emotions and promote healing through the therapeutic power of music. His upcoming debut album, LIAR, promises a collection of original songs that will emphasise the importance of emotional honesty. With influences ranging from singer-songwriter to pop genres, as well as reimagined covers paying homage to his musical inspirations, KRISTOPHER showcases his versatility and unique creative vision.
“Swear to God” is KRISTOPHER’s latest single, a poignant exploration of the complex dynamics within abusive relationships. The song cover the feelings of loneliness and the desire to change oneself in order to earn the love and acceptance of others. Through an undertone of innocence, KRISTOPHER captures the emotional struggles faced by those who sacrifice their own identity for the sake of external validation. This moving track, released following the end of the pandemic, resonates with audiences by highlighting the challenges of conforming to societal expectations and the yearning for acceptance and love.
KRISTOPHER’s intention with “Swear to God” is to expose the often harmful falsehood that one needs to change to be deemed worthy. Drawing from personal experiences, he shares his own struggles with the belief that altering oneself is necessary to please others, including a higher power. The rejection of an aspect of his identity fuelled the desire to do anything possible to rectify it. By shining a light on this internal conflict, KRISTOPHER encourages listeners to embrace their true selves and reject the notion that they must change to find acceptance.
While “Swear to God” resonates strongly with LGBTQ audiences, its universal message of the significance of unconditional love and acceptance transcends boundaries. KRISTOPHER’s stunning vocals, accompanied by graceful acoustic guitar, create an ethereal ambiance that pulls listeners into the emotional depth of the song. The delicate drumbeat and captivating piano chords intensify the energy during the chorus, leaving a lasting impact. The artist’s ability to build and release tension throughout the track showcases his musical prowess, resulting in a mesmerising and timeless pop sound.
KRISTOPHER’s “Swear to God” is a dazzling showcase of his remarkable talent as a singer-songwriter. The song’s lyrical vulnerability and emotive vocal delivery make it relatable and profoundly moving. It serves as a reminder that embracing one’s true self is vital for personal growth and fulfilment. With each release, KRISTOPHER continues to win over audiences with his ability to craft songs that resonate deeply and leave a lasting impression.
We caught up with KRISTOPHER to find out more about his inspirations, his new single “Swear to God” and what he’s got lined up for the future. Check out our interview with KRISTOPHER below.
Hey Kristopher, how’s things?
Hi! Things have been pretty good! Busy with releases and my first live performance. Everything’s been really exciting recently.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
I say this in almost every interview but Ariana Grande. Everything about her voice and her artistry has been incredibly inspirational to me.
What’s your earliest memory of making music?
I remember when I was taking piano and viola lessons I would ask my teachers to help me create my own songs. When I was a kid I was obsessed with trains and dragons so they usually had one of those two things in the title somewhere.
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
So many! I draw inspiration from most artists I hear, even if I’m not particularly into their music. I will say that a few artists consistently come out with music that touches me creatively. Billie Eilish and Finneas, Ryan Robson-Bluer, Noah Cyrus, Aly & Aj, Joji, Noah Davis, and of course Ariana Grande.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
Most of the inspiration I get for my music comes from my own emotions and experiences within my life. I also tend to find inspiration from the people around me, my friends and family.
What do you love about the Orlando music scene?
Unfortunately I’m not as involved in the Orlando music scene but I just did my first live performance and I met some incredible Orlando based artists. I hope to get more involved this year.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
Depends on the person but because of the mostly depressing nature of the music I would say probably in your room, with headphones in. I also like to play around with harmony and I want to get more complex and I personally love putting on good earphones and listening in depth to whatever ear candy I can make.
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
As I get more comfortable with writing I’m allowing myself to open my mind up to what the music could be. I used to always go into songwriting with a set goal and although that’s a good mindset to have, sometimes it can really complicate things to have such a rigid expectation. I’ve also been able to play around with sounds that are different to what I would normally play around with, like pop.
How did you find making your new single “Swear to God”?
Surprisingly easy. This was one of those songs that came about in 40 minutes or so. The hardest part was finding the right lyrics to convey what I really needed to express but once we had the music the words came out. My incredibly talented producer, Nate Khors, came up with such a fantastic guitar part, I knew immediately upon hearing it that it would end up being the foundation of ‘Swear to God.’
What message did you want to get across with this release?
The song itself is about abusive relationships and the damage it does to ourselves to try and change just to earn the love or acceptance of others. It’s never a healthy position to be in and I want people to know that genuinely, they aren’t alone. And if you find yourself wanting to change yourself intrinsically for someone else and it does no positive service to you, then that’s a red flag.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
As always, Ariana Grande. I like to put on some of her more harmony heavy music and just pick it apart. Each line is so intricately beautiful and I wish people would look past the pop artist persona and dive deeper into her music.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
Really, that it’s okay to be sad. For now, all of my music is really focused on connecting and accepting the emotions we feel.
What’s been your favourite live performance so far?
Of my own? Well, I only have one so far that I did last week, but I was pretty proud of that performance so I’d have to say that one!
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
Ariana Grande, Noah Davis, and Doja Cat.
I mean I’d love it if it was in Orlando! I’m not the biggest fan of travel.
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Don’t give up. Writers block, imposter syndrome, the industry itself… all of these things are going to get in your way. I think it’s important to think about what you really want to gain from being an artist. Have the goal and keep sight of it and I know it’s cliche, but don’t pay much attention to any haters, whether they’re people around you or the negative thoughts in your head.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
I’ll be working on my Next EP and second Album! I’ve still got a few singles to release to round out my first album, including a music video. I’m super excited to be finishing up my test album and diving into more creative and different projects.
