We caught up with Pahjo to find out more about his inspirations, his new single with BPSoca Music and what he’s got lined up for the future. Check out our interview with Pahjo below.
Hey Pahjo, how’s things?
I’m absolutely fantastic. I just came back from being part of the ONE GUYANA concert in Toronto (Canada), so I’m in high spirits.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
Definitely Machel Montano with his song, Big Truck. After hearing that song I have been addicted to Soca music
What’s your earliest memory of making music?
That would be 2019
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin, Skinny Fabulous and Problem Child. I am also being drawn to the musical style of Afro Beat artiste, Black Sheriff
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
From anywhere really. A positive conversation with the right person can trigger a melody or a creative idea. Melodies and ideas are all around us.
What do you love about the London music scene?
Its diversity. There are many genres that are accessible such as Dancehall, Trap, Drill, Rap, Afro Beats, Pop, House, Soca, Reggae, Salsa, Reggaeton, and the list goes on and on. This is why we are now seeing a large number of international talent in the music industry coming to London to start or continue their dream
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
I have so many different sounds and story telling in my music. Many listeners would say they listen to my music in the comfort of their home or driving to create good vibes and then there are others who would prefer night club settings. My music is adaptable to all environments!
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
Oh definitely. I have been on a journey of self-reflection and experimentation of music for almost 4 years. I now have an idea of the direction I would like to go and I am taking my listeners with me.
How did you find making your new single “Challenge”?
This was so much fun from start to present. When Gareth sent the instrumental beat, I was lucky to have OhXone (songwriter from Trinidad and Tobago) staying with me during his time in the UK and he quickly found a melody, put his pen to paper and got to work on the song. It has definitely been a project I’ve learned a lot from.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
I think this one was more fun and targeting choreographers. We want to see more choreographed dances from around the world, so we tried to keep it true to the feel and sound of Soca music.
How was it collaborating with BPSoca Music on this track?
Gareth is so easy to work with. He aims for the best and it resonates in his work. He has taught me a lot during this process and I hope we can work again soon.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
Black Sherif. His work has really grown on me.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
It’s purity. I want my listeners to join me on my journey of self-reflection and learn of the things I love in life through music.
What’s been your favourite live performance so far?
Opening for Voice in London (an artist from Trinidad and Tobago)
Wonderland UK (An annual carnival themed festival in England)
Jam J’ouvert 2023 (A festival in London)
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
It would have to be myself, Machel Montano and Teddyson John back home in Guyana
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Do it and believe in yourself. Put fear away and push forward. Be open to positive criticism and remove the “yes” people from around you and trust in your vision. Be true to you and your sound.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
Quite a few gigs both in the UK and overseas which I will exclusively announced on my social media channels. I cannot wait for them. Follow me on IG @pahjomusicofficial for announcements on my future releases and shows.
