The musical partnership between instrumentalist Brendan McGarvey and vocalist Ciaran Megahey, known collectively as Loveproof, is a tale of musical destiny. Having initially collaborated during their high school days in the late 90s, their paths diverged only to eventually reunite in 2013. What followed was a fusion of talents and a musical journey that’s led to their latest EP, Winter’s Children. This collection of four tracks showcases Loveproof’s evolution as a band, bringing their unique brand of gothic dream pop to the forefront.
The EP encapsulates Loveproof’s signature blend of darkness and melodic allure, all woven within a tapestry of dreamy atmosphere and carefully constructed arrangements. The release opens with “A Song Is Not Enough,” a track that immediately envelops the listener in an ethereal soundscape. A snapping beat merges with soft guitar plucks, serving as a backdrop to Ciaran Megahey’s vocals. His voice, softened by reverb, carries a sense of melancholic beauty, painting a vivid emotional landscape.
“Spires,” the second track, presents a more euphoric sound. Dreamy guitars and bass interweave over a dub-inflected rhythm, creating a musical experience that’s soothing and entrancing in equal measure. The vocals meld seamlessly with the instrumentation, creating a sea of shimmering textures that wash over the listener. “Even the Stars” adds a touch of indie rock to Loveproof’s sonic palette. Gently fuzzy guitar tones blend with Megahey’s delicate vocals, resulting in a laid-back yet captivating composition.
The EP culminates with “Young Lords,” a mesmerising track that showcases the project’s mastery of sonic layering. Punchy beats and pulsing bass lines form a foundation for an intricate tapestry of instrumentation, providing a captivating sonic journey that concludes the EP on a high note.
Released via Chic Monk Records and recorded at Mammoth Hall Studio in Toronto, Winter’s Children beautifully combines elements of dream pop, indie rock and dub, all while embracing a darkly gothic aesthetic. The EP’s four songs highlight Megahey’s graceful vocal delivery, alternately moving and rich, alongside McGarvey’s range of instrumentation.
Throughout the EP, Loveproof’s songwriting talent and performance panache shines. The release sees Loveproof’s sound expand and evolve, promising to win over new listeners while delightful their existing fan base. Winter’s Children stands as a resounding statement of the project’s musical prowess and their ability to create a uniquely compelling sound unlike anything else. With each track, they take the listener on a journey through emotions and musical landscapes, reaffirming the power of music to evoke feelings, stir the imagination and leave a lasting and worthwhile impact.
Commenting on their new EP and upcoming live shows, Ciaran Megahey shares, “We’re very excited to finally play live shows with the new members and put out some new original material. As happy as we were with our debut album, we really feel like we have taken the song writing and production to another level here. Something changed with the Joy Division cover. Everyone we played that to was blown away by it. This EP promises to take things that much further.”
