Toronto-based solo artist Päter is carving a unique path in the indie pop landscape, weaving rock undercurrents into their original musical offering. Emerging onto the scene in 2020 with the debut single “Damn, Damn,” Päter’s musical journey has been marked by a series of releases that showcase their evolving artistic vision. Notable among these are the EPs SOLE and WHEREFORE WEEP I THEN? released in 2020 and last year, respectively.
Now, with the release of “Something // Way” (read as ‘Something in the Way’), Päter delivers an indie rock anthem that pulsates with charisma and a relentless energy from the start. The song’s entrance is marked by the moody strums of a subtly gritty electric guitar emphasised by the punch of drums. With a smooth and fluttering vocal delivery, Päter navigates the verses with compelling melodic lines that weave an intricate sonic web.
However, it’s the chorus that truly shines as Päter lays down an upbeat, power pop-inspired soundscape that radiates with positivity and fervour. This dynamic interplay between intense rock-infused verses and uplifting, melody-driven choruses reveals Päter’s skilful command over their sonic palette. The song’s production, reminiscent of early 2000s indie rock bands like The Strokes and The Killers, pays homage to these influences while maintaining a fresh and contemporary appeal.

Beyond its infectious musicianship, “Something // Way” is also a lyrical journey that resonates with relatable themes of self-sabotage and reflection. The song’s charm lies in its authenticity, as Päter explores the universal struggle of grappling with stop-start dynamics and the challenges of self-imposed hurdles.
What makes “Something // Way” truly exceptional is Päter’s ability to conjure a full-band sound as a solo artist. The intricate guitar work, rousing drum arrangements and the artist’s versatile vocal delivery combine in a harmonious crescendo that showcases Päter’s performance talents. The song exudes an undeniable magnetism, drawing listeners into its sonic realm and keeping them captivated throughout.
With “Something // Way,” Päter has confirmed their status as an artist of noteworthy caliber, capturing their growth, innovation and authentic connection with their audience. With its anthemic energy and relatable charm, “Something // Way” stands as a highlight in Päter’s artistic evolution and their promise to continue going from strength to strength with each new move.
We caught up with Päter to find out more about their inspirations, their new single “Something // Way” and what they’ve got lined up for the future. Check out our interview with Päter below.
Hey Päter, how’s things?
It’s been a particularly good week so I’m feeling great.
What’s your earliest memory of making music?
I have a strange vague memory of making my mom jot down lyrics for me before I could actually write… something about a bird I was looking at.
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
Caroline Polachek has been huge for me lately. Her production is so unique and intricate. And I’ve also just gotten into Radiohead… you might’ve heard of them? I’m a bit behind with the deep dive but have been listening to The Bends on repeat.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
There’s some inspiration in anything that creates a strong feeling inside you, which for me is a lot of things. Anxiety is a big source of inspiration for me.
What do you love about the Toronto music scene?
The number and quality of open mics and jams! You’ll get people of any skill level, in any part of their career coming out to our open mic scene. There’s a great sense of community and I’ve met some of my dearest friends that way.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
Maybe alone in your room when you’re deep in your feelings but there’s no one there to share it with. Also pairs well with being in your feelings with friends and/or strangers.
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
My music has always been a bit of a play between irony and earnestness. When I started, I was leaning a lot more into the sarcasm and irony side. It made sharing vulnerable things easier. As I’ve progressed, I’ve gotten more comfortable just being earnest. That comes through in a lot of the music that’s on the way. Not to say there isn’t still a bit of a wink behind it. That’ll always be there in varying degrees.
How did you find making your new single “Something // Way”?
Something // Way was a blast to make! There’s a big indie rock, Strokes-y influence in this tune. I’ve always loved that kind of music. We recorded this with some awesome musicians – Finn Smith on drums, Alex Purcell on lead guitar, Howard Redekopp on bass – and I just got to rock out and have fun with it.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
The song kind of stands in solidarity with anyone who’s felt paralysing self-doubt, especially when trying to do something they really care about. It’s a catharsis and ultimately a “I feel you but don’t give up”. I hope it gives people the fuel to keep working toward the thing they want but also a little hug for the road.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
A feeling of not being alone in the journey of it all. It’s hard, it can be sad, but life is also really funny and charming. I hope I can meet people where they’re at and bring them to a lighter place.
What’s been your favourite live performance so far?
We’ve had a lot of super fun ones lately but the last one I did was special. I did a solo set during a drag show, which I’d never done before, and that was one of the most raucous, rock and roll experiences I’ve had. Everyone was just so open and down to clown (I should add – it was a circus themed night) that we just fed off each other’s energy and had an awesome time.
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
I’d love to see a sci-fi themed festival with Muse, Grimes and Caroline Polachek headlining. Perhaps in the Grand Canyon.
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Start doing it with whatever is available to you and do what gets you excited. Don’t wait for some imaginary future version of yourself to do it for you.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
Well, I can say there’s more to come. It’s been a summer of upbeat, good times singles. That’s all about to change. We’re taking spiral down to the dark and weird, and I think you’ll want to come along.
