Jesse Judies is the musical moniker of artist Nick Bray, a former fixture of the San Francisco indie music scene, who now brings us his latest offering with the new EP titled Colors of Youth. Bray’s journey through the indie landscape has been marked by a series of projects and collaborations, from his guitar work with Music For Animals to his role as the frontman of EagleWolfSnake. However, it’s under the persona of Jesse Judies that he’s embarked on a deeply personal and creative odyssey.
The genesis of Jesse Judies dates back to 2018 when Nick Bray began his foray into music production, culminating in his debut full-length record, Thoughts In A Loop. As fate would have it, the release of this record coincided with the onset of the pandemic. To remain close to his Australian partner and avoid the trials of separation, Bray made the decision to relocate to Sydney, bidding farewell to his San Francisco roots.
Yet, rather than succumb to the challenges of the pandemic-induced isolation, Bray used this period to continue creating music. This creative spree has culminated in a new upcoming album, Coup De Foudre, which chronicles Bray’s experience of uprooting himself during the pandemic and finding his footing in Australia.
The opening track of the new EP, “Colors of Youth,” stands as an exemplary collaboration between Jesse Judies and Sasha March. It paints a vivid sonic canvas with its bright and breezy indie pop stylings. The synergy between Bray’s and March’s vocals creates a harmonious duet, carried by laid-back melodies that dance upon a foundation of dreamy guitar textures, a pulsing bassline and the gentle rhythm of drums. It’s an inviting introduction to the EP, setting the stage for what’s to come.
“Oumuamua” follows suit with a lively blend of funky guitars and rhythmic drum patterns. Jesse Judies, Sasha March, Matthew Power and Ollie Brown combine their talents to deliver an infectious indie pop groove. The track brims with uplifting energy, fuelled by spirited vocal exchanges between Bray and March. It’s a celebration of sound and emotion, seamlessly weaving together their voices and instrumentals into an irresistible sonic tapestry.
The EP’s conclusion, “Just In Case,” adds an indie rock-infused layer to the pop stylings that permeate Jesse Judies’ music. Bray’s graceful vocals glide effortlessly above a lightly punchy beat, accompanied by airy synth tones and warm bass guitar tones.
As Jesse Judies prepares to embark on a Californian tour, bringing these vibrant tracks to life on stage, it’s clear that his music is a breath of fresh air in the indie rock scene. Colors of Youth and the forthcoming album, Coup De Foudre, offer a much-needed infusion of creativity and vitality, showcasing the continued evolution of an artist who refuses to be confined by convention.
