Coming out of London’s music scene, Phoebe Coco is an artist whose sonic journey intertwines nature’s serenity with the vibrant pulse of urban life. Born in The Brecon Beacons National Park, her upbringing was steeped in music, with influences spanning from her uncle Pedro Ortiz drumming for legends like David Bowie and Mick Jagger to her mother’s involvement in the musical Hair and dance appearances in Diana Ross videos. This rich musical heritage laid the foundation for Phoebe Coco’s own artistic path.
After graduating from Brighton’s Art University, Music & Visual Arts program, Phoebe Coco started out in London’s thriving music scene. Her extensive background in songwriting and composition led her to explore diverse musical spheres, from experimental sound performances with the Breathing Space Collective to composing for film and theatre.
With her latest release, the EP titled I Am Not a Machine, Phoebe Coco embarks on a captivating musical odyssey, inviting listeners to connect with nature and embrace the innate warmth and softness within us. The EP’s three tracks offer a profound exploration of living contradictions, highlighting the delicate interplay between the untamed wilderness and the bustling cityscape.
The EP’s lead single and opening track, “Machine,” provides a sonic voyage that blurs genre boundaries and showcases Phoebe Coco’s exceptional artistic vision. The song, formed during her time at art school and recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, introduces us to Phoebe’s enchanting vocals, which hover gracefully above the gentle pulse of a soft synth. As the song unfolds, soulful melodies intertwine with warm piano chords, gradually building into an ethereal indie pop atmosphere that envelops the listener in its dreamy sound.
“Clear Eyes” offers a lush and textural sonic landscape. Minimalist piano arrangements blend with deep bass synths, cello, saxophone, flute and electronic elements, creating a mesmeric soundscape that wraps listeners in its swirling tones and sonic warmth.
The EP closes with “Earth Dream,” where Phoebe’s elegant voice floats delicately above gentle piano chords and the subtle heartbeat of a kick drum. As the song unfolds, it gradually builds into an immersive and melancholic sound, with the soft percussion providing a rhythmic foundation for layers of guitar and orchestral flourishes. “Earth Dream” serves as a captivating conclusion to this exceptional EP, leaving listeners with a sense of reflection and wonder.
