Toronto-based artist George Crotty is a cellist and composer whose artistic pursuits are fuelled by an inquisitive nature that sees him apply his extraordinary talent across various genres. A formidable force in the modern music scene, his influences span string-focused ornamentation, Indian classical music, innovative electric guitar techniques and the intrcate articulations of jazz bass.
Known for his role in the Loose Roots Duo and leadership of the George Crotty Trio, he distils the culture of his hometown in his modernist genre-blurring approach. A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Crotty’s musical journey has seen him work with ensembles such as the Canadian Arabic Orchestra, Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra and New York’s Brooklyn Raga Massive, as well as collaborating with Darol Anger, Simon Shaheen, Paquito D’Rivera and Anat Cohen.
As a solo artist, George Crotty unveiled his debut EP, World of Groove, in 2018, revealing his style in a three-track sonic exploration. Then focusing his creative output to his trio, the following year, The George Crotty Trio released their first record with Four String Nomad, followed up in 2022 with the sophomore album Chronotope.
Now returning to his individual sonic vision, he’s set to release his follow up to World of Groove with his second EP, Inner Nature, which will be released in April. Once again delivered in a three song format and collaborating with producer Bob Ezrin, Crotty transforms the cello into a self-contained orchestra, exploring a spectrum of moods and personalities that dissect modernity, tradition, the essence of love and his profound connection with nature.
Opened by “Hidden Within,” the EP starts with contrasting layers of delicate stretched cello tones riding the playful plucks of pizzicato strings. Crafting a heartfelt sound, it’s a beautiful display of George Crotty unique sound that’s at once classically informed and thoroughly modern. Sweeping through mood shifts across its ninety-second structure, it’s an elegant instrumental piece that perfectly sets up his new EP.
Title track “Inner Nature” follows with a moody aesthetic cast by ominous deep cello tones before settling into a light groove of staccato string notes and gentle pattering percussive shots. Bold and immersive, it’s s stellar example of where a virtuoso musician and composer will go when allowed the freedom to explore on their own.
The EP closes with “The Fog,” starting with a moving blend of droning bass notes as the smooth top lines craft an emotive Irish folk-inspired scene. With a sparse arrangement and thoughtful composition, it’s a powerfully moving piece that draws on George Crotty’s sensational ability to conjure emotion both via each note and the spaces between them. It’s a truly enchanting musical experience and one that’s well worth diving into upon it’s release at the start of April.
