Since then he’s released two full-length records and multiple singles and remixes while linking up with artists such as Chris Turner, Cheri Coke, Elle Pierre, Lary and Shungudzo among others. Now he brings us his latest outing with the brand new EP and first in a series titled Wake n Bake, Vol.1, a sonic distillation of daily ritual.
Contrary to the traditional connotation of ‘wake and bake,’ MELO-X’s EP celebrates purposeful mornings; a meditation on starting the day with intention. Each track mirrors the varied energies of morning routines, turning mundane activities into moments of mindful engagement.
Opened by “Rise n Shine,” the EP kicks off with the day-break sound of birds chirping as deep bass tones and airy synth leads filter in with soft bell chimes to craft a breezy instrumental intro to set up the record. The shuffling beat of “Green BABA Riddim” follows with it’s laid back groove and bright instrumental flutters. Flowing through an upbeat soundscape full of playful synth textures and steady rhythm, it’s a smooth jam to gently build up the energy.
“Midday by thee Ocean Nimo’s Ship Approaching” takes things in an atmospheric direction with a minimal arrangement of hazy synth tones and sparse bass notes as the distant sweeps reflect the swell of the sea. “Ok Agua Keys Riddim” injects an uptempo vibe with a punchy beat as grooving bass pulses and the mix is peppered with spacey samples and popping instrumental shots.
Other highlights on the EP include songs like “Happy Smiles Take 1” with its elegant piano-led intro, joined by the bubbling buzz of synth as the rhythm gradually forms. Flowing through a jazz-inflected scene of smooth sonic tones, warm piano notes and mellow vibes, it’s an expansive instrumental experience that intricately develops from start to finish.
The EP closes with “Green Means Go Riddim,” where the lively flourishes of stuttered synth tones and stretching textures contrast as the thud of the kick sets a stripped back beat to propel the track. Erupting in a flurry of rapid percussive shots, a drum and bass energy launches an epic ride through an immersive musical experience to perfectly conclude MELO-X’s incredible and highly original new EP.
