Based between Ireland and Germany, JP Kennedy is a talented singer-songwriter, blending his punk rock roots with elements of folk and grunge to create a unique sonic output that’s been winning over audiences around the world. With a rebel spirit and a knack for storytelling, Kennedy’s music flows across genres, drawing listeners into his world of musical exploration and adventure.
Having previously developed his skills as the lead singer of a rock band, JP has more recently ventured on a solo journey, dazzling live crowds with his performances. Supporting leading acts such as The Rumjacks, The Mahones, The Bollock Brothers and Tommy Sands, JP Kennedy has firmly placed himself on the map of must-watch artists on the rise.
Last year he followed up with singles two and three with “Born Under a Bad Sign” and “Vaudevillian Rose.” Now he brings us his latest release, the four-track EP Highway Star which features his previously released singles alongside the brand new title-track single.
In “Highway Star,” Kennedy spins a compelling tale inspired by the adventures of his great grandfather, Con Kennedy, in late nineteenth-century Arizona and New Mexico. The song tells the story of a Highwayman separated from his young son after being jailed, depicting his daring escape and subsequent rescue of his son before introducing him to the life of a “Highway Star.”
Laying down more of his engaging alternative folk sound, with “Highway Star” the artist offers a gripping musical storytelling experience wrapped up in a rhythmic rock-tinged folk jam. Opened by the bright staccato stabs of strings as the shuffling drums and layers of guitar tones form an infectious groove as JP’s voice glides in and the intricate twang of instrumentation peppers the arrangement with colour.
Threading vivid picture painting lyricism that transports you straight to the wild west where we follow his great grandfather’s adventures, JP delivery catchy melodic leads via his rich voice. Rising to a hook-driven chorus, the song delivers a truly memorable listening experience that builds to an epic crescendo where JP’s soaring vocals dance with the overlapping strings to craft an anthemic finale. It’s a sensational new outing from a talented artist who’s upcoming debut album titled “Road to Jerome” promises more thrilling story-focused folk music.
