Ezra Grey is a Brazilian-American singer-songwriter and guitarist whose musical journey spans classical, jazz, rock, hip hop and metal influences. With a background in the traditional disciplines of the sonic arts and a double degree in music and philosophy from Columbia University, Grey brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his musical endeavours.
Previously he’s composed, recorded and toured internationally with various bands since the age of 15, earning awards and accolades for his performances and compositions along the way. As a solo artist, he stepped out under his own name in October last year with his debut single “Into The Sun” which he’s since followed up with a string of well-received singles over the last few months.
Now he brings us his latest release, sharing his brand new debut EP as a solo artist with the six-track release titled Afterall. The EP serves as the perfect run through of Ezra Grey’s evolution as an artist, featuring compositions that stem from his teenage years to the present day, all with themes of love, heartbreak and reflection.
Drawing on influences from his diverse musical background, Grey pieces together guitar-driven melodies with elements of metal, jazz harmonies and hints of Latin and reggae influences. Produced by Grey himself alongside Zaki Ali, with creative consulting by instrumentalist Angel Vivaldi and industry expert Jason Lekberg, Afterall is a collaborative effort that showcases Grey’s musical vision and extraordinary talent.
Kicked off with the titled track “Afterall,” the EP starts with the delicate patter of shuffling drums and intricate flourishes of clean guitar tones as Ezra’s rich voice glides in to spin stretched melodies above. Building anticipation with the strike of drums, the song bursts into a stunning chorus of anthemic indie rock cut with subtle pop styling and brought to life by his superb vocals and deft musicianship panache.
“Yael” pairs lightly buoyant melodies carried by impassioned vocals as the rattle and splash of gentle drums propels bright layers of shimmering guitars to cast an enchanting indie jam. With “Horrorshow,” Ezra’s songwriting flair and instrumental ability collide in spectacular fashion with a rhythmic groove capped by slick lead guitar licks and expressive vocals serving up engaging melodic leads.
Fourth track “Bliss” reveals the tender side of Ezra’s musical output with a mellow arrangement of dreamy guitar textures and hushed percussive touches as his moving vocals paint emotive brush strokes above. His debut single “Into The Sun” follows with warm tones of strummed acoustic guitar, smooth vocal lines and the rustling shuffle of of drums on a graceful outing that rises and falls with stellar ebb and flow and electric guitar leads to present his dazzling sound in a way that’s impossible not to love.
“Whispers In The Dark” concludes the EP with lightly playful guitar plucks to create a charming musical experience full of intricate reversed percussive textures and guitar leads, led by the sensational writing and vocal performance of Ezra Grey. From start to finish, Ezra Grey offers a spellbinding listening experience across “Afterall,” demonstrating hints of his virtuoso skills packaged in a delightful release with wide appeal.
