Standing at the crossroads of indie rock and post punk, Davis Gestiehr‘s musical journey is one defined by stitching palpable pain and poignant songwriting to create a dark yet compelling sonic fabric. Drawing inspiration from the likes of The Cure, Arctic Monkeys and Bloc Party, he crafts music that’s at once familiar and entirely new, offering listeners an expansive artistic statement with every song.
Alongside his solo musical adventure, Davis also forms one-half of the Nashville-based duo Doom Mutual alongside Daphne Browdy. Under his own name however, he first unveiled his unique sonic vision with his debut single titled “Without You” back in 2019.
Releasing multiple singles with Doom Mutual throughout 2021 and 2022, last year saw him ride a wave of creativity, dropping several solo releases as well as with the other project. Now bringing us his latest release as Davis Gestiehr, he shares his brand new EP with the four-track release titled I’m Always Lying… Make Me Famous!, offering the perfect run through of his unique musical world.
Opened by “CCTV,” the EP immediately hops with a grooving guitar riff riding the driving punch of drums as Davis’ commanding vocals enter to thread engaging melodies above. Setting a rousing rock scene, thumping rhythm propels catchy hook-focused writing to deliver this uncompromising and energising outing full of gritty arrangement and epic vocals that have you hanging off every note.
Next up, “Marlon Brando (I hate Yr Guts)” serves up a fuzzy tone and downtempo rhythm with twanging lead guitar notes giving way to the crunchy rhythm as Davis spins swaggering vocals above. It’s an angsty rock stomper cut with punk attitude and a superb contrast between moody aesthetic and subtly bright melodic flourishes.
Lead single “Courtney Love” shifts gear with airy guitar chords and elegant vocals floating above where the rich Alex Turner-esque timbre of Davis Gestiehr’s voice shines. Bursting with a lively beat and intricate guitar layers, the song lays down an instantly infectious indie rock sound full of silky vocal stretches and anthemic, readio-ready quality.
Closing the EP is the beat driven, psychedelic-tinged sound of “Follow you Down” where a hazy pop rock soundscape sees hushed vocals hover above immersive instrumentation of dreamy guitar textures and breezy melodic lines. It’s the perfect finale to the artist’s incredible EP, bringing the release to a satisfying conclusion with another memorable and impeccable crafted song that further showcases Davis Gestiehr’s sheer sonic range while maintaining the distinct thread of his irresistible sound.
