Jimmy Lim is a Boston-based Indonesian American artist making an impact with his hyper-stimulating music and innovative vocal arrangements. Formerly known as J Lym, he’s already earned attention for his unique sonic approach, utilising synths and digital manipulation to craft a wildly original sound.
Currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Jimmy Lim is not only a performer but also an engineer for other artists, actively contributing to the music scene in the Northeast. Now embracing his true identity, he unveils his latest musical endeavour under his given name, Jimmy Lim.
With the release of his singles “Ride,” “Empty,” “Oop” and “Slow Down,” Jimmy Lim has been teasing a new direction in his artistic journey. Now, he presents his most ambitious project yet; his brand new EP titled Transmissive.
Transmissive is a five-track EP that traces Lim’s journey from Jakarta to Boston and New York City, incorporating elements of traditional Javanese folk songs, Asian pop and global music styles. Each track on the EP offers a unique sonic experience, driven by Lim’s penchant for using recycled sonic materials to create something entirely new.
Opened by “OKAYPAPI,” warbling vocal whispers, chopped and spliced set an intriguing tone for the track erupts with thumping beats, intense synth textures and rhythmic vocal delivery. Flowing through a dark and moody hyperpop style scene, the track immediately grabs your attention and hints at the thrilling and experimental journey the EP offers.
“Ride” follows with jarring bursts of crashing instrumental energy before settling into a slick groove of pattering percussion and shifting to a bright aesthetic with playful vocal flourishes. Title track “Transmissive” starts with gritty vocalisations before sliding into a spacey electronic soundscape packed full of twists and turns. Belted vocals inject raw energy as the hazy crunch of synth tones abruptly give way to a kaleidoscopic moment of subdued and subtly haunting instrumentation is a spectacular display of Jimmy Lim’s originality and sound design panache.
“Oop” highlights the artists lighthearted writing and an experimental approach, with powerful beats and rattling synth textures cut with twisted R&B melodic ideas. The punching beat underpins Jimmy’s expressive vocals, serving up bouncy lines as the shifting arrangement floats into a dreamy sound of airy tones before the rumble of bass and piquant instrumental lines crafts a thrilling and highly engaging sound.
The EP closes with “Slow Down” where silky synth swells and smooth vocals contrasts with deep tones and the gritty buzz of synth leads. Slowing the rhythm down towards the final moments, the track offers the perfect showcase of his ability to reframe pop-focused songwriting in a twisted, avant-garde sound, resulting in a listening experience unlike anything else out there.
