Sydney-based punk rock singer-songwriter and DIY music video maker Jovi Skyler has been working on his unique sonic vision for years. From his early days of playing guitar to his brief stint at the Conservatorium of Music, Skyler’s journey has been built on his determination in bringing to life his uncompromising alternative sound.
After leaving formal music education, he spent over two years in Europe, performing unplugged solo gigs in cafes, bars and other venues. It was during this period that Skyler’s blend of alternative rock, early 90s aesthetic, psychedelia and punk attitude began to take shape.
Skyler first introduced his music to the world in 2019 with his debut single “Love Bite,” followed by an eponymous debut EP the next year that showcased his post grunge structures and incisive takes on contemporary issues. The reception was positive, and he continued to build his repertoire with a series of singles leading up to his critically acclaimed debut full-length album Nothing to Do which won over fans around the world while securing extensive radio support throughout Australia as well as in the USA, UK and Japan.
Going hand in hand with his musical output, his self-made music videos offer the perfect visual counterpart to his songs with a DIY aesthetic. Now, continuing his musical story, he brings us his latest EP with the four-track release titled Call It A Day, written, recorded and produced by Jovi Skyler entirely himself.
Presenting the latest chapter of his psych-tinged punk rock sound, the new EP kicks off with “Asshole” as a fuzzy guitar riff rides the pounding drums before Jovi’s commanding vocal leads enter to spin catchy leads above. With a gritty sound and memorable writing, the track delivers an anthemic sound full of powerful vocals, biting lyricism, lively drums and driving guitars.
Lead single “Lil Bo Weep” is written about the life and strife of the late Aussie singer of the same name. Brought in by a hazy swell of guitar strums and drum strikes, Jovi’s voice ushers in an energising sound of moody punk rock packed full of punchy rhythm and memorable vocal leads. Paired with the single is a brand new music video created by Jovi which features archive footage of Lil Bo Weep stitched together with swiftly shifting cuts to create a gripping visual pairing that reflects the energy and raw sound of the music.

“Frankenstein” offers a different side to his sound with a delicate blend of clean guitar tones, softly tapped percussion and the laid back twang of his airy vocal performance. Showcasing the tender facet of his songwriting, elegant melodies drift above the downtempo indie arrangement to cast a charming sound and softer moment on the EP.
With “Rumble,” Jovi serves up one final dose of his crunchy punk sound with a grooving rhythm and slick arrangement that rises and falls with dynamic ebb and flow. Capped by raucous vocals and brimming with splashy drums and rousing sonic energy, it’s a superb finale to the artist’s new EP that sees him once again deliver his highly original and thoroughly engaging sound.
