Coming out of the Portland music scene, Kallai is a newly formed outfit that’s been quick to make an impact with listeners via their unique blend of shoegaze, post punk and gothic aesthetics. The band features accomplished musicians from celebrated acts like Trance to the Sun, Luscious Apparatus, and Lost Echoes, bringing together the talents of David Gross, Daniel Henderson, Cate Hukle and Brian Wilcher.
Formed last summer, Kallai has been quietly developing their sound in the background, drawing inspiration from their diverse musical backgrounds while exploring new sonic territories. They officially debuted in March with their single âAlways/Never,â which showcased their dreamy shoegaze sound and introduced the world to their unique musical output.
They followed up with sophomore track âPalisadesâ last month, they revealed another side to their sonic vision with post punk and synth-based influences. Now, the band presents their most ambitious release to date with their eponymous debut EP, Kallai, a four-track collection that offers a perfect snapshot of their musical journey so far.
The EP opens with debut single “Always/Never,” an enthralling track that immediately grabs attention with its crunchy guitars, pulsing bass and slick drums. The song marries a laid-back groove with splashy cymbals, creating a moody yet uplifting atmosphere as Cateâs airy vocals float above the arrangement, the song transitions into a dreamy soundscape, threading smooth melodic stretches that are both haunting and beautiful. The chorus, with its fuzzy guitars, punching drums, and catchy vocal hooks delivered in a hushed manner, wraps the listener in a musical fabric that is as anthemic as it is memorable.
Following “Always/Never” is “Palisades,” which begins with a mellow pulse of bass guitar and the snap of drums. Hazy guitar chords drift alongside a stretching synth tone in the distance, forming a smoky soundscape that’s at once atmospheric and reflective. Davidâs soft vocals provide gentle melodic leads that build the energy subtly, crafting a chorus rich with floating textures contrasted by the driving rhythm of drums and bass lines.
Presenting the first taste of their newest material, “Dig” injects lively energy with racing drums and driving riffs, to craft a riveting sound that deftly blends racing energy with an ethereal vocal performance that drifts above the charging arrangement. With another display of their original songwriting and musicianship flair, it’s an epic ride that grabs you from the very first moment and doesn’t let go to the closing moments.
With the EP’s final track, the lilting sway of shuffling drums, warm bass notes and piquant lead textures are met by washy vocal sweeps to craft an enveloping soundscape of delicate melodies and soothing instrumental tones, forming a downtempo soft rock sound to perfectly conclude the band’s debut EP. Across the four track on Kallai, the band serves up a gripping run through of their highly original and thoroughly engaging sound, firmly placing themselves on the map of must-watch artists on the rise.
