Monterrey-based DJ and producer Mi chi ko has been making an impact in the electronic music scene since she began her journey in 2016. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Boys be Kko, DJ Gigola and Ela Minus, Mi chi ko has become a must-watch name in her own right.
Her project was born in the underground dance scenes of Kobe and Osaka, Japan, where she was living at the time. Upon returning to Mexico, she explored the vast array of electronic music genres, perfecting her live sets that have since lit up art exhibitions, fashion catwalks, festivals and events.
Often performing alongside her Monterrey-based dance collective, Loop de Loop, Mi chi ko has earned a reputation as an exceptional DJ and producer. She’s also the co-founder of the label Penumbra, through which she supports local talent while crafting her signature blend of electronica, deep house, indie dance and more.
In 2022, Mi chi ko captured her sound in the studio with her debut single “Ame ga furu,” and followed it up last year by collaborating with Andrik on “INSIDE INSIDE.” Now, she returns with her latest release, the debut three-track EP titled Frenesí. This EP showcases her talent in creating thrilling dance tracks that pay homage to the 90s club sounds, such as acid techno, while fusing modern and sophisticated touches and sultry vocals.
Kicked off with the Fausto remix of Mi chi ko and Andrik’s track “Inside Inside,” the EP gets things moving with pulsing rhythms and hushed spoken word elements. The perfect pairing of buzzy electronic energy and sensual vocal touches, the track flows into a downtempo dance outing full of zappy synth tones and steady beats.
Next up, KickZologo remixes Mi chi ko’s debut single “Ame ga furu” to serve up a spacey blast of hazy synth textures and tribalist rhythms. For the final track, Mi chi ko collaborates with fellow Monterrey-based DJ and producer SOLAR X on the new original cut “Recuerdos” to lay down a deconstructed club anthem capped by playful synth leads, punchy beats and a colourful array of electronic instrumental tones to craft a constantly shifting sonic ride to offer the perfect finale to her superb debut EP.
