Lou Lou De Rose is an extraordinary freestyle artist and activist who instils powerful messages of social justice with the therapeutic essence of music in her first release, the debut EP titled Lounuh. Born into a Rastafarian household in Eastbourne, Lou Lou’s upbringing was immersed in the rhythms of reggae and the teachings of peace, love and justice. Moving to South London at 14 further strengthened her connection to music as a form of healing and expression. As a young mother at 15, Lou Lou’s transformative experiences deeply inform her musical output, which manifests words and energies that heal.
Drawing on the seven vibrations of the earth, her sound is both deep and spiritual, reflecting her unique perspective on life. Lou Lou De Rose’s music is a tool for activism, addressing societal issues and advocating for youth rights and opportunities. Inspired by her daughter, her artist name symbolises beauty, resilience and love. Embracing her uniqueness and resilience, Lou Lou stands firm in her truth, using her platform to amplify important voices and stories. Through her involvement in youth policy and activism, she continues to make a significant impact in her community, embodying the essence of a Nubian queen dedicated to justice and healing.
Three years ago, Lou Lou De Rose embarked on a journey to create her EP. This project distils all the trials and tribulations that have shaped her, each moment divinely orchestrated to bring her to where she is today. Lounuh offers a sonic exploration of the intersectionality of human experience. It’s about the phases we go through, much like the powerful cycles of the moon. Luna’s phases reflect our own journeys, illuminating the beauty and complexity of our transformations. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, we all have a Lounuh side, an ever-evolving sequence waiting to be tapped into.
The opening track “Mixed Emotions” is a song that examines complexities of feelings and sets the tone for the EP’s overarching theme via a beat-driven alternative R&B outing that deftly balances a delicate arrangement, softly thumping drums and powerful vocal performance.
Highlights on the release include tracks like “Bonnie and Clyde” which presents a heartfelt breakup song, expressing the struggle of severing a deep, soulful connection. Showcasing the tender side of LouLou De Rose’s songwriting while still maintaining her pop-focused R&B sound with bags of wide appeal, the track threads her impassioned and at times angsty vocals through an elegant piano-driven arrangement.
Closing the EP with the aptly titled “Toxic Love,” spacey synth tones float as pitched vocalisations usher in LouLou De Rose’s hard hitting vocal delivery. It’s another superb display of her original sound as well as her knack for wrapping meaningful songwriting into catchy and highly enjoyable music. Making a compelling artistic statement with her debut release, LouLou De Rose is most certainly an artist to keep an eye on and we can’t wait to see what else she has in store for what’s sure to be her breakout year.
